Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Gregory Scarpa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ginekes Poutanes! The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Bruno Hogan and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Scarpa uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Poutanes. Scarpa moves into range and clinches up with Poutanes. Scarpa tightens his grip and picks Poutanes up, before dumping him to the ground. Poutanes manages to land in guard. Scarpa is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Poutanes controls Scarpa momentarily but Scarpa frees himself. Scarpa stands up from guard. Let's bang! We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Scarpa darts in looking for a takedown but Poutanes gets double underhooks and turns Scarpa into the cage. Scarpa looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. A looping hook to the body misses from Poutanes. Scarpa does a little dance to reset his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nice takedown defense from Poutanes. No joy for Scarpa on that attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gregory Scarpa. That's going to take a lot out of him. Scarpa avoids the body shot from Poutanes.
Scarpa looked to counter that last move with a leg kick but didn't pull the trigger. Poutanes tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Scarpa was well out of range. Poor timing from Poutanes. Scarpa misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Scarpa bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Poutanes trying to remain calm as Scarpa controls from the top position. Poutanes tries to get back to half guard but can't. Scarpa cracks Poutanes with an elbow. That is naaassty. Scarpa is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Poutanes knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Scarpa staying calm. Poutanes really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Scarpa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Scarpa scores with punches from side control. Scarpa remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Poutanes is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Scarpa's leg. Oh but that's left an opportunity for Scarpa! He's got an arm triangle... it looks tight! He's rotating and Poutanes has tapped! This one is allllll over!
