Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
24 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Artem Bessmertin! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Cian Cartwright! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Jeff Smith and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bessmertin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Bessmertin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Bessmertin tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Bessmertin scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Cartwright to see if he's OK. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cartwright is working to avoid the ground and pound but Bessmertin connects with a decent elbow. Bessmertin throwing shots but missing, from side control. Bessmertin misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Bessmertin is looking to take a break and control but Cartwright is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. We've been hearing good reports from Bessmertin's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Cartwright is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Bessmertin is controlling him well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bessmertin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Cartwright keeps working. Cartwright wants to get back to his feet but Bessmertin drags him back down. Check out the look on Bessmertin's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
Bessmertin in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. Cartwright manages to work his way to half guard, despite Bessmertin's best efforts. Bessmertin sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Cartwright defending well though. Bessmertin wants to control but Cartwright is keeping him busy. Cartwright tries to kick Bessmertin off but Bessmertin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Bessmertin missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Bessmertin prevents Cartwright from improving his position. Cartwright is not content to let Bessmertin control the position. Bessmertin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Cartwright trying to control but Bessmertin postures up.
Cartwright is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Bessmertin scores with a couple of nice shots. Bessmertin misses with a head shot. Cartwright uses the momentum to regain guard. Bessmertin stopping the sweep attempt from Cartwright. Cartwright controls Bessmertin momentarily but Bessmertin frees himself.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bessmertin is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Bessmertin trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Cartwright tries to strike from the bottom.
Bessmertin passes easily into side control. Nice work. Bessmertin working away. Bessmertin wants to control but Cartwright is keeping him busy. Bessmertin tries to advance to mount but can't. Cartwright struggling a bit here. Cartwright prevents Bessmertin from improving position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Bessmertin scores with a big shot from side control... and another... and another! Oh Cartwright is done here - save him referee! More strikes land and eventually the ref does step in and Bessmertin can finally stop beating on his defenseless opponent!
