Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between David Paul (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Buzz Sawyer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Paul comes to the cage accompanied by Lamb of God-Omerta. Sawyer has chosen I Gotta Get Paid as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, David Paul!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Buzz Sawyer!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sawyer feints and as Paul raises his hands in defense, Sawyer changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Sawyer stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Paul swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Paul is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Paul wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Sawyer wants to control from the top but Paul keeps moving.
Sawyer missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sawyer postures up in Paul's guard and throws a big left but Paul blocks it.
Sawyer won't allow Paul to get back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Paul gets caught flat footed, as Sawyer shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Sawyer thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Paul's head.
Sawyer is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Paul reverses the position - he's now on top in Sawyer's guard.

It looks like Buzz Sawyer has been cut.

Sawyer shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Paul but Paul pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A left lands for Paul.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Paul drops Sawyer with a right and a left! Paul comes rushing in but Sawyer regains his composure and manages to keep Paul in guard.

Sawyer throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Paul escapes and throws Sawyer's legs to the side, diving into side control!
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Sawyer is looking for a sweep.
Paul is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Sawyer's shoulder. That is not cool.

Paul wants to control the pace but Sawyer is squirming around nicely.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sawyer is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Sawyer shoots for a double leg takedown but Paul sprawls well. He's pushed Sawyer's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Sawyer misses with an uppercut. Paul saw that one coming.

Sawyer closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Paul is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Sawyer off and has taken his back!
Paul is trying to stick to Sawyer's back but Sawyer is turning into Paul. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Paul's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Sawyer.

Paul is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Paul here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sawyer is going olschool here, as he tries to force Paul to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Paul shrugs it off.
Buzz Sawyer has got the better of the ground game so far.

Sawyer escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Paul gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That was a close round but David Paul did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it.

Paul throws a head kick but Sawyer moves out of range.

Sawyer changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Paul tries to avoid it but Sawyer manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Paul to the ground. Paul escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
