PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jin Jin Ipa (ranked 4564 p4p, 426 weight class) and Marshall Banks (ranked 3263 p4p, 321 weight class). Banks has chosen L.D Poppin as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jin Jin Ipa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Marshall Banks! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Columbo Gatti and Steve Montenegro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Banks connects with a good right hand that stumbles Ipa. Ipa circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Ipa uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Banks. Banks misses with a looping right. A slow jab from Banks misses its intended target. Ipa tries to counter with a takedown but Banks is quick to defend against it. Ipa takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Banks tests Ipa's chin there with a solid looking shot. Ipa displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Banks throws out the jab. Banks misses with a looping left. Ipa takes one on the button. Horrible takedown attempt by Ipa or perhaps it was just good defense by Banks, which made it look bad. Nice defenses there by Ipa. Ipa changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Banks looks to land a right hand but Ipa moved out of range. Banks lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Ipa tries to score a power double leg takedown but Banks sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Ipa somewhat.
That's one minute gone in the round. Banks loads up on a big right hand but Ipa slips the punch. Ipa staying out of range there. Ipa attempts a counter takedown but Banks avoids it well and moves away. Banks lands a lovely overhand right. Banks throws a hook but Ipa avoids it easily. Ipa tries to counter with a takedown but Banks is quick to defend against it. Ipa ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Ipa slips under a jab from Banks. Ipa drops down looking for a counter takedown but Banks sprawls and moves away. Ipa takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Ipa looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Ipa goes for a double leg but Banks avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Banks continues to drive forward. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jin Jin Ipa. That's going to take a lot out of him. A punch lands to the side of Ipa 's head but he takes it in his stride. Banks looks to land a left hand but Ipa moved out of range nicely.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ipa takes one on the button. Banks lands a two punch combo.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Banks connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head. A jab from Banks finds it's way through Ipa's defenses. Ipa shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Ipa is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Banks doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Ipa. Ipa moves nicely into side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Banks tries to improve position but can't. Banks really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Ipa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Ipa wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Banks, who protects the arm well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ipa is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Banks has escaped the position, nice work there. Banks is trying to get back to half guard. Banks throws a punch from the bottom, which has left him a bit exposed here… Ipa has an arm triangle now. This could be big trouble for Banks. He's out! He's out cold! The ref pulls Ipa off and Ipa celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Jin Jin Ipa!
