PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Maddox Wood (ranked 4752 p4p, 528 weight class) and Japa Koniu (ranked 3756 p4p, 429 weight class). Wood's entrance music is 3 6 mafia 1 hitta quita. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Wood tries to clinch but fails miserably and Koniu connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Wood closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Koniu tries to break the clinch but Wood is controlling the position. Koniu's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Wood throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Koniu counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. A low kick from Wood is predictable there and Koniu counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Decent striking displayed by Koniu there. Wood misses with a looping right. Koniu's coach down at St Petersburg MMA Gym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Koniu's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Koniu closes the distance and lands a crisp combination that knocks Wood out cold! Wood corner are devastated, head in hands behind our commentary position. Poor guys.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Japa Koniu! A very excited looking Japa Koniu made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
