PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Diego Gaspar (ranked 5178 p4p, 0 weight class) and Phoenix Wright (ranked 6492 p4p, 513 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Diego Gaspar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Phoenix Wright!
The judges for this bout are Jeff Smith, Chris Saunders and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Gaspar needs to keep his hands up - Wright had a free shot at his head there.
Sloppy strikes from Wright. Those never looked like landing.
Wright scores with a shot to the body.
Wright misses with a double jab.
As Wright tries to get set, Gaspar tries to push him back and clinch up but Wright manages to avoid the attempt.
Phoenix Wright seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gaspar slips under a jab from Wright.
A slow jab from Wright misses its intended target.
Wright throws a series of punches but Gaspar avoids them all with ease.
Gaspar is trying to close the distance and clinch up, after that failed offence from Wright.

Wright drives through and clinches with Gaspar against the cage.

Gaspar drags the fight down to the ground.
Wright must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gaspar looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Gaspar is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gaspar bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Wright's guard.

Gaspar is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Wright is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Gaspar thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Wright keeping full guard, as Gaspar tries to pass.
Gaspar sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Wright's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Wright has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gaspar is working away from the top position though.
Gaspar keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gaspar has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Gaspar is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Wright doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Gaspar.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Gaspar is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Gaspar perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Gaspar is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Wright has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gaspar content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Gaspar passes to full mount!

Gaspar is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Wright can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Gaspar looking for a guillotine from mount but Wright is having none of it.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Gaspar is trying to take his opponent's back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Diego Gaspar dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Wright managing to block the knees to the body from Gaspar.

Gaspar jumps into guard, dragging Wright to the mat.

Gaspar is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Wright rolls with it to try and escape but Gaspar cranks on the arm and Wright is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:38 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Diego Gaspar!
