PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Frank Martin (ranked 1711 p4p, 259 weight class) and Jos Beton (ranked 1136 p4p, 177 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Frank Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jos Beton!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A low kick from Martin misses

and Beton counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Martin!
Martin can't do much from the bottom here.
Beton trying to control the action but Martin is working from the bottom.

Beton tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Beton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Martin keeps working.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Beton wants to control but Martin is keeping him busy.

Beton is working for a submission of some sort.

Martin is looking for a sweep. Beton is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Martin pushes Beton off looking to stand but Beton dives back in and keeps control.

Beton is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Martin sees it coming and defends easily.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Martin wants to get back to full guard.

Beton seems to be working for a kimura but Martin defends the submission attempt.

Beton wants to control but Martin is keeping him busy.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Beton has his takedown stuffed
and Martin counters with a thumping low kick.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Beton is defended easily by Martin.

Martin wants to clinch but Beton slips to the side

and Beton counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Beton.
Martin utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Beton seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jos Beton dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Beton shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Martin leaves Beton with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Martin throws a quick counter kick to the body but Beton avoids it.
Beton shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Martin defends it nicely.
Frank Martin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jos Beton.
Beton dives in and grabs Martin's left leg, looking for a takedown. Martin pushes down on Beton's head and hops out.
Beton tries for a takedown but Martin circles away easily
and Martin counters with a thumping low kick.
A solid leg kick lands there for Martin.

Beton moves out of range as Martin strikes.
Beton drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Martin defends it well.

Martin fails in his attempt to clinch.

Ouch! a nice leg kick from Martin, right into the meat.
Martin fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Martin lands with a kick to the ribs.
Martin tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
And Beton tries to counter it with a takedown but Martin pushes his down on his head and steps out.
Beton blocks a jab.

Martin rushes Beton and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Beton has picked Martin up - he's going for a ride! Beton dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Beton is breathing heavily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Martin is positioning himself well to prevent Beton advancing to mount.

Beton is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Martin is just riding it out for now. Beton eventually gives up the hold.

Beton is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Beton is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Beton is looking for submissions but instead, Martin has regained full guard.
Martin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Beton wants to control from the top but Martin keeps moving.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Beton darts in looking for a takedown but Martin gets double underhooks and turns Beton into the cage.

and Beton counters with a single leg into guard. Martin didn't expect that.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

and Beton counters with a shoot takedown. Martin fights it but they end up in guard.

Beton sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Martin's guard.

Martin moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Martin connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.

Beton avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Beton dives in and grabs Martin's left leg, looking for a takedown. Martin pushes down on Beton's head and hops out.

Beton takes one to the side of the head.
Frank Martin is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Beton jumps guard and drags Martin to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Beton throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Martin escapes and throws Beton's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Beton takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Beton tries to buck Martin off but Martin is having none of it.
Martin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Beton keeps working.
You can see the frustration on Beton's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Beton is looking to reverse the position.

Martin trying to control the position but Beton is working away.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
