TWGC 18 (170lbs, D1): Sydney Qualifier - Round 2 PBP Commentary


Coming up we have a welterweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Kasey Scorpion (ranked 452 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tyaf Daeland Puno (ranked 192 p4p, 0 weight class). Scorpion comes to the cage accompanied by Jiu Jitsu. Puno has chosen I'm a soldier - Tupac as his entrance music. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 2 losses; Kasey Scorpion! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 1 wins and 1 losses; Tyaf Daeland Puno!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Ben Hemmingworth and Darius Henderson.

Scorpion clinches.

Scorpion decides to pull guard.
Puno is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Puno's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Puno tries to free his leg and advance position but Scorpion is retaining full guard.

Scorpion working for a triangle but Puno defends it easily.
Puno sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Scorpion's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Puno takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Scorpion tries to roll over but Puno keeps him under control.
Puno is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Puno wants to control the pace but Scorpion is squirming around nicely.
Scorpion is in all sorts of trouble here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like Puno might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Puno got a little sloppy there for a moment and Scorpion has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Puno has managed to get both his arms back between Scorpion's legs - danger averted.

Scorpion is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Puno is aware though and is defending well.

Scorpion is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

I really don't envy Puno right now.
Puno has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it.
