PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Aston Davids (ranked 9315 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rory Green (ranked 7890 p4p, 0 weight class). Rory Green will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Aston Davids!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rory Green!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Winston Alpacca and Dirk Anderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Davids moves into the clinch successfully.
Green misses with a knee to the head.
The referee is keeping an eye on Green - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Green is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Davids gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Davids is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Green pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Davids tightens his grip and picks Green up, before dumping him to the ground. Green manages to land in guard.

Green manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.
Green working some nice short punches in the clinch.
Davids tries to break the clinch but Green is controlling the position.
Davids is trying to pull guard but Green turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
I was talking to Davids's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Davids tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Green just stands there and leans against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aston Davids. That's going to take a lot out of him.

The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Green takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Davids is pushing Green up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Davids could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Green tries to land a knee to the head but misses.

Green tries a body shot but Davids blocks it.

The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Davids tries to pull guard but Green won't allow it.

Green works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Davids bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Green's guard.

Green is refusing to be controlled, as Davids sits in half guard.
Davids prevents Green from improving his position.

Davids is trying to control the action in half guard but Green is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Davids thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Green is staying active underneath Davids, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Green is looking to control Davids's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Green avoid being mounted?
Green is looking to improve his position.
Green keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Davids is looking to stall here but Green recovers full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Davids connects with a couple of short punches.
Green is trying to keep Davids in close.
Davids has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Our spies down at at Cozad The Island inform us that Green has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Green is fighting off a takedown attempt but Davids is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Green to the mat. Green regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Green had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Davids defends it easily.
Aston Davids overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Davids is pushing down on Green's leg trying to pass to half guard. Green is fighting to maintain full guard but Davids has managed to sneak the leg through.
Green is breathing heavily.
Davids is trying to control the action in half guard but Green is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Still in half guard, Davids seems content to control.
Green wants to improve his position but Davids is controlling well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Davids looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Davids thows a huge punch but Green dodges it nicely.

Green is trying to control but can't.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Aston Davids is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Davids closes this distance looking for a takedown but Green circles away.
Green closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Davids clinches up with Green and pushes him back against the cage.
Davids jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Green walks away with a smile on his face. Davids gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Davids is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Green just misses with a punch to the body.
Green is trying hard to land a takedown here. Davids sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Davids looked to counter with a high kick but didn't commit.

Davids moves into range and clinches up with Green.
Green with an attempt at a knee that misses.

Davids has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Green avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

That was a close second round but I would say that Aston Davids will probably get the nod.

and Davids decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Green's guard.

Green pushes Davids off and scrambles back to his feet.

Despite the aggression on Green's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.

Davids closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Green is trying to maintain a safe position but Davids gets an underhook and turns Green into the cage.
Green swings wildly with an uppercut but Davids uses good head movement to avoid it.
Green manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.
Davids misses with a punch to the body.

Davids jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Green walks away with a smile on his face. Davids gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Davids looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Davids throwing shots but Green is blocking nicely.
Green is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Green actively working from the bottom here.
Green takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Davids uses his free foot to push down on Green's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Green.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Davids lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Green is desperately trying to improve his position but Davids has a good base and remains in mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Davids takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
