Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Horacio Martins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
19 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ernesto Panado! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Emerson Jorge and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martins rushes Panado and presses him up against the cage. Panado is trying to trip Martins. He has hold of a leg but Martins is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Panado persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Martins looking to control.
Panado wants to pass the guard but Martins is keeping the position. Panado prevents Martins from getting back to his feet. Panado stands and throws Martins's legs to the side, diving into side control. Panado working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Panado tries to advance to mount but can't. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Martins tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's one minute gone in the round. Martins struggling a bit here. Panado tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Martins manages to get back to half guard. Martins is trying to control but can't.
Martins definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Panado wants to pass to mount but Martins is defending the position. Panado works his way into side control. Martins tries to improve position but can't. Panado advances nicely into full mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Panado has hold of Martins's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Martins manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Martins is desperately trying to improve his position but Panado has a good base and remains in mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Martins tries to hold on but Panado postures up. Panado working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Martins turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Panado off and cradles Martins's limp body as Panado celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Ernesto Panado! An out of breath Ernesto Panado thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
