PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Trevor McDonald (ranked 2176 p4p, 100 weight class) and Wamberto Boaz (ranked 3724 p4p, 184 weight class). Boaz comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Preciso me encontrar kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Wamberto Boaz!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Jorge Garcia and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boaz looks to land a body kick but McDonald moved away.
McDonald jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit.

Boaz has taken the fight to the clinch.
McDonald lands a right hand that snaps the head of Boaz backwards.
McDonald blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Boaz has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. McDonald avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Boaz throws a punch but it's blocked by McDonald.
McDonald misses with a short punch on the inside.
McDonald tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
McDonald content to slow the pace in the clinch.
McDonald throws a head punch that misses.
McDonald misses with a hook from the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
McDonald has a couple of punches blocked by Boaz.
Boaz misses with some punches.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by McDonald as Boaz tries to tie him up.
Boaz tries to throw a body punch but McDonald avoids it by throwing Boaz back against the cage.

The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Boaz is trying to drag McDonald to the mat but McDonald just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

I was talking to McDonald's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.

Boaz gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Boaz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and McDonald defends it well.
Boaz is taking a breather. McDonald says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

McDonald pushes Boaz off looking to stand but Boaz dives back in and keeps control.
Boaz not doing much here.

Boaz is looking for a kimura but McDonald is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Boaz to get the leverage.
McDonald is looking to improve his position.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Still in half guard, Boaz seems content to control.
McDonald knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Boaz on the ground.

Boaz is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Boaz seems to be working for a kimura but McDonald defends the submission attempt.

Boaz seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

That was a close round but I would say that Trevor McDonald will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Boaz wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Boaz has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as McDonald is landing a low percentage of strikes.

and Boaz counters with a series of strikes. McDonald will be more careful next time no doubt.

Wamberto Boaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

McDonald throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Boaz uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from McDonald.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

It seemed like Boaz was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

McDonald's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Boaz connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! McDonald scrambles back to his feet.

McDonald's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

That was a close second round but I would say that Trevor McDonald will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

It looked like McDonald was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.

Boaz has managed to clinch.
McDonald lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
The referee is keeping an eye on Boaz - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Still in the clinch, McDonald scores with a nice short uppercut.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

McDonald throws an elbow that misses. Boaz uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in McDonald's guard. Nice move by Boaz!

Boaz is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, McDonald has managed to free his arm - good work.
McDonald tries to roll over but Boaz keeps him under control.

McDonald is defending against the submission attempts here by Boaz.

Boaz is keen to just control but McDonald is a slippery customer.

Boaz is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so McDonald is just riding it out for now. Boaz eventually gives up the hold.

Boaz has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can McDonald defend it? Boaz steps over the head and cranks it - McDonald is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Boaz!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:37 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Wamberto Boaz!

After winning the bout, Wamberto Boaz thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
