PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Dave Randall (ranked 24858 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tiago Mendez (ranked 4717 p4p, 0 weight class). Randall comes into the arena with Promentory blaring out of the sound system. Mendez has chosen Trap Door as his entrance music. On his way into the cage it seems that Dave Randall has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Dave Randall seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Dave Randall!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 41 - 39 - 0, fighting out of London, Tiago Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, James Glass and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mendez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Randall, pushing him back against the cage.
Mendez blocks an elbow strike from Randall.
Mendez is looking to take this one to the mat.

Randall jumps guard.
Mendez trying to control but Randall is working from the bottom.
Mendez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Mendez works over Randall with some ground and pound from guard.
Randall looking for a sweep. Not yet Randall, not yet.

Mendez stands up and waves to Randall to follow him.

Mendez moves into the clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mendez gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Randall manages to escape and get back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Randall throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Mendez counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Randall throws a right and a left that Mendez avoids nicely.
Randall tries for a takedown but Mendez sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Mendez.
Mendez tries to advance to mount but Randall denies him.

Mendez is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Randall knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mendez tries for a kimura but Randall is defending well.
Randall wants to control but Mendez postures up.

Randall is pushing Mendez's head away, looking to escape. Mendez manages to hold on to the position though.
Randall seems a little lost for a moment, as Mendez dominates the positioning.
Mendez postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Mendez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Randall has escaped the position, nice work there.
Randall is trying to control Mendez's posture but Mendez avoids it.

Mendez is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Randall is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Randall is not in a great position here, taking some shots.

Mendez landing strikes.

Mendez stands up and beckons Randall to his feet.
Mendez goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Randall looks for the body kick but Mendez saw that one coming.
Mendez is loading up here, looking for a big counter of his own.
Mendez tries to clinch up but Randall circles away and keeps his distance.
Mendez shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Randall eats them both and turns towards Mendez to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Mendez has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Randall is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Randall tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Randall moves into range and clinches up with Mendez.
Mendez is looking to control Randall's arms but Randall gets an underhook and turns him. Now Mendez has his back to the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Randall throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Mendez blocks it with crossed arms.
Randall is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Mendez to keep the fight standing.

Mendez is trying to trip Randall. He has hold of a leg but Randall is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Mendez persists though and gets the takedown into guard.

Randall knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mendez on the ground.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tiago Mendez dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Randall tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Mendez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Randall tries to clinch but Mendez moves out of range.
Randall takes a body punch but keeps moving.

Mendez has Randall up against the cage in a clinch.
Randall tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Mendez just stands there and leans against the cage.
Randall throws an elbow that misses.

Randall breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Mendez misses with a head kick.

Mendez tries to clinch up but Randall circles away and keeps his distance.
Mendez moves out of range of the strikes.
The fighters circling - Randall throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
A little jabbing left from Mendez on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Randall tries a head kick but it misses.

Randall is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Mendez lands a two punch combo.
Dave Randall is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Randall misses with a body shot.
Mendez uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Randall.
Mendez drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Randall defends it well.
Mendez circles away from the clinch attempt.
Randall thows a leg kick but Mendez checks it
and Mendez counters with a straight right hand.
Mendez tries to close the distance and clinch but Randall swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Randall avoids a kick to the body.
Randall throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Mendez wants to counter the offense by Randall and move into the clinch position.
Mendez swats away the attempt to clinch by Randall.
Randall does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.

Mendez leaves Randall with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Randall tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Mendez is clearly looking to counter with head kicks.
Mendez misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mendez is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Mendez has managed to clinch.
Randall tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Randall misses with a hook from the clinch.

Randall changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Mendez fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dave Randall. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mendez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Randall tries for a takedown but Mendez circles away easily
and Mendez counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Mendez feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Mendez is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Mendez stops Randall from standing up.
Mendez passes into half guard.
Mendez lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Randall is defending against the submission attempts here by Mendez.
Mendez wants to lay and pray for a moment but Randall keeps working.
Randall taking some punishment here, with Mendez in his half guard.
Randall tries to roll over but Mendez keeps him under control.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Mendez connects with a nice short shot to Randall's temple.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tiago Mendez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Mendez changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Randall darts in trying to clinch

and Mendez decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Randall's guard.
Randall is wriggling around but Mendez manages to pass to half guard.


Mendez is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Randall doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mendez.

Randall is looking to control Mendez's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Randall avoid being mounted?

Mendez is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Randall is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:49 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Tiago Mendez!
A relieved looking Tiago Mendez thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
