Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jospeh Petersen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Andre Barbosa! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Sosuke Kotani and Tatsuya Matsuyama.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Left hook, right uppercut from Barbosa. Petersen does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Petersen is defended easily by Barbosa. Barbosa unleashes a big counter combination but Petersen bobs and weaves and avoids any damage. Petersen tries to keep at a distance but Barbosa has taken the fight into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Petersen prevents Barbosa from breaking the clinch. Barbosa looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now. Petersen has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Barbosa uses from the top position. Petersen working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Barbosa.
That's one minute gone in the round. Petersen has a closed guard, preventing Barbosa from standing up. Petersen might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Petersen keeping moving, preventing Barbosa from controlling successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Barbosa postures up in Petersen's guard and throws a big left but Petersen blocks it. Petersen trying to control the position.
Petersen wants to sweep but no luck.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Barbosa!
Petersen dodges the punch combination from Barbosa.
Barbosa closes the distance and clinches. Petersen with a knee to the head.
It looks like Andre Barbosa has been cut. Petersen manages to break the clinch.

Petersen tries to pull guard but Barbosa won't allow it.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Petersen changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Barbosa fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jospeh Petersen. That's going to take a lot out of him. Barbosa throws a right and a left that both miss. Andre Barbosa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Barbosa stuffs the takedown attempt from Petersen. Petersen gets slowly back to his feet. The fight moves into the clinch position. Petersen pulls guard effortlessly. Petersen wants to sweep but no luck. Petersen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Barbosa's guard.
Petersen could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Barbosa wants to get back to his feet but Petersen passes into half guard.
Barbosa flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Barbosa keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Petersen seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Barbosa does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Barbosa trying to control but Petersen postures up.
Barbosa looks winded! Petersen seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Petersen lands a nice short elbow. Barbosa pushes Petersen off looking to stand but Petersen dives back in and keeps control.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Petersen looks to score some points with some ground and pound. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Petersen slips a nice elbow through Barbosa's hands, connecting with Barbosa's forehead. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Petersen looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Jospeh Petersen will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Andre Barbosa's cut. That's time! Petersen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Petersen gets a clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Petersen ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Petersen no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Petersen is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Petersen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Petersen trying to control the position here.
That's one minute gone in the round. Petersen continues to stall. Barbosa wants to control from the top but Petersen keeps moving. Barbosa postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Jospeh Petersen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Petersen wriggles free and stands up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Barbosa moves into the clinch. Petersen is working for takedown but Barbosa is calmly controlling the position for now. Petersen has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Barbosa uses from the top position. Petersen preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Barbosa is posturing up here but Petersen has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Barbosa tries to roll out but it's too tight and Barbosa has to tap! Slick submission there by Petersen!
