Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lance Paul! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Peter Barnkvist! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Hirohito Nitta and Ren Mimura.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Paul steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Barnkvist. Paul takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Barnkvist tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Paul was well out of range. Poor timing from Barnkvist. Paul is looking to counter punch. Barnkvist takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Paul misses with a double jab
and Barnkvist counters with a right hand to the body. A left and a right from Paul both land. Nice combination. Barnkvist has his takedown stuffed and Paul counters with a good low kick that Barnkvist was not able to check. Paul throws a leg kick that misses. Paul lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Barnkvist throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Paul throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Barnkvist let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land. Barnkvist drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Barnkvist trying to control but Paul is working from the bottom. Paul has his foot on Barnkvist's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barnkvist works his way back into a safe position though. Paul controls Barnkvist momentarily but Barnkvist frees himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Barnkvist postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Paul keeping moving, preventing Barnkvist from controlling successfully. Paul throws his legs up looking for a submission but Barnkvist uses it to pass to side control.
Barnkvist landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Paul tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Barnkvist wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Barnkvist cracks Paul with a big right hand but Paul just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Paul regains half guard. Barnkvist thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Paul is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Paul taking some punishment here, with Barnkvist in his half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Barnkvist throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Barnkvist connects with a nice short shot to Paul's temple. Barnkvist lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Barnkvist takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Paul wants to get back to full guard. Paul actively working from the bottom here. Barnkvist working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Barnkvist landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Paul tries to roll over but Barnkvist keeps him under control. Barnkvist is nestled in close to Paul, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Paul has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Barnkvist is working away from the top position though. Paul has hold of Barnkvist's hands but Barnkvist slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Barnkvist winds up and cracks Paul with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Barnkvist is thwarting Paul's attempts to control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Barnkvist is keen to just control but Paul is a slippery customer. Barnkvist working Paul over with strikes. Paul moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Barnkvist forces his way into half guard. Paul wants to control but Barnkvist is keeping busy.
Barnkvist scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Paul is rocked! Paul is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Barnkvist jumps into side control! Oh Paul is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Barnkvist cracks Paul with a big elbow. Oh, he's hurt! Barnkvist immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Paul is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Barnkvist!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Peter Barnkvist!
