Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Christian Volland (ranked 1460 p4p, 209 weight class) and Neil Gilas (ranked 1619 p4p, 227 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
17 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Christian Volland! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Neil Gilas! The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, John Kavanagh and Alyssa Summers.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Volland lands with a straight right. Gilas didn't see that one coming. Gilas scores with a decent looking hook. Volland tries a head kick but it misses.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Gilas! But no joy. Volland looks to score with a jab to the body but Gilas is just out of range. Volland rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gilas moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Gilas appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick. Nice defenses there by Volland. Volland throws a right hand that misses
and Gilas counters with an inside leg kick. Volland with a nice cross. Nice body punch from Gilas. Gilas connects with a high kick. We've been informed that Gilas has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result. Gilas wants to land a leg kick but Volland is out of range. A low kick from Volland misses and Gilas counters with a straight right hand. This has been an exciting period of action! Gilas takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
That's one minute gone in the round. Volland throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Volland with a jab. Volland with a nice cross. Volland thows a leg kick but Gilas checks it and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick. Volland lands with an uppercut that bounces Gilas off the cage and back into range. An inside leg kick lands from Volland. Gilas lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Gilas takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Volland on the wrong end of a nice jab. Volland on the receiving end of a decent leg kick there by Gilas. Gilas obviously looking to wear him down.
Gilas throws a leg kick and Volland counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Volland connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Gilas cracks Volland with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. Gilas lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Volland closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Gilas blocks the elbow strike.
Volland lands a left hand that snaps the head of Gilas backwards. Volland working aggressively here.
Volland throws a head punch that misses. Gilas prevents a body shot from Volland. A shot in the inside from Volland. Our sources have told us that Volland has been working on his elbows in the gym. Volland doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Volland tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Gilas stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Gilas lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Volland backwards. A head punch blocked on the inside by Gilas. Gilas blocks a body shot from Volland. Gilas lands with a good tight uppercut to the head. Volland fails to land with a short punch on the inside.

Gilas lands a shoulder strike. Volland softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Volland tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Volland can't find room to land a body shot as Gilas controls the action.

Gilas tries to free his leg and advance position but Volland is retaining full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Volland isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Gilas stacks Volland on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Gilas! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Volland is looking for a sweep. Gilas is chipping away with strikes.
Volland tries to buck Gilas off but Gilas is having none of it. Gilas connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Volland some visible discomfort.
Volland is looking for a sweep. You can see the frustration on Volland's face as Gilas controls the position. Volland takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Volland tries to improve position but can't. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gilas cracks Volland with a big elbow. Oh, he's hurt! Gilas immediately mounts and start dropping bombs! Volland is done! The referee jumps in and saves him from any more punishment - a quick and decisive finish by Gilas!
