PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Alexander Potter (ranked 1963 p4p, 259 weight class) and Romulus Veres (ranked 2173 p4p, 279 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 9 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Alexander Potter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Romulus Veres!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Veres throws a head kick that misses.
Veres throws a leg kick which misses Potter's front leg but catches the back leg as Potter tries to avoid it.

Potter instigates a clinch.
Potter blocking some punches.
Veres misses with a hook to the ribs.
Veres misses with a punch to the body.
Veres lands a nice uppercut.
Veres throws a punch but it's blocked by Potter.
Potter blocks an uppercut.
Potter goes for a takedown attempt but Veres pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Nice uppercut there from Veres.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A solid body kick from Veres.
Potter lands a nice looking kick to the body. Veres takes a step back to recover.

Potter feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

We've been hearing good reports from Potter's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Potter trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Potter trying to control the position from guard on top but Veres is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Potter shoots for a takedown but Veres saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Veres is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Potter.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Potter.
Potter doesn't manage to clinch there - Veres circles away.

Veres has his feet on Potter's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Potter moves away from the strike by Veres.

Potter closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Veres to the mat! Veres manages to get full guard.

Veres manages to wriggle out and sneak his way back up to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched up against the cage.

Potter breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Veres misses with a body shot.
Veres throws a leg kick but Potter checks it.
Nice body kick from Veres.
Potter shoots for a double leg takedown but Veres sprawls well. He's pushed Potter's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Veres lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Potter pivots, looking for a leg kick but Veres is out of range and Potter settles back down.
Veres checks a leg kick nicely.
Veres lands with a good body shot.
Potter walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Veres looks to land a right hand but Potter moved out of range.
Potter lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Potter misses with a series of wild punches.

Potter has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Veres finds it's way round the side to connect with Potter's head.
Good work by Potter as he checks the leg kick.
Potter tries to counter with a takedown but Veres is quick to defend against it.
Veres scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Nice jab there from Veres.
Romulus Veres is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Veres tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Potter moves out of range of the strikes.
Potter cracks Veres with a good jab.
Potter on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Potter tests Veres's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Veres misses with a straight left.
Potter shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Veres pinned against the cage. Veres gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Veres scores with a push kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Romulus Veres dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

Potter punishes Veres's body with a nice straight punch.
Veres takes a swing at Potter's ribcage but misses.
Potter's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Veres connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Potter scrambles back to his feet.

Romulus Veres seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Potter takes one to the side of the head.
Potter gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Veres counters with a stiff right hand.
Potter blocks the body kick.
Romulus Veres seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A kick lands to the mid section there for Veres.
Veres scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Potter doesn't seem bothered though.
Potter misses with the combination.
Veres has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Potter throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Veres on the side of the head.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Veres displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Potter throws out the jab.

Veres cracks a nice hook into Potter's ribs.

Veres goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Veres throws a nice looking combination but Potter bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Veres moves into range and connects with a jab.
Potter misses with a straight right.
A little jabbing left from Veres on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Veres connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Veres does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Potter changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Veres pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Veres throws a front kick aimed at Potter's knee but Potter avoids it well.
Potter ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Veres lands a nice shot to the body.
Potter is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Veres.

Veres throws an overhand right that lands on Potter's shoulder, as Potter tries to avoid the shot.

Veres lands an overhand right.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Potter has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Potter there as he acknowledges the shot.
Potter misses with a low kick as Veres jumps back.
Veres takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Potter.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Potter scoring with punches and elbows.

Potter tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Veres is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Potter's leg. Oh but that's left an opportunity for Potter! He's got an arm triangle... it looks tight! He's rotating and Veres has tapped! This one is allllll over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:46 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Alexander Potter!

In defeat, Romulus Veres stepped up to the mic, saying 'I've failed this time but I will be back to reform this poor soul.'.
