Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Henrique! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, The Snake! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Daniel Cesar and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Henrique shoots for a double leg takedown but Snake sprawls well. He's pushed Henrique's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Henrique backing away here, and Snake unleashes a leg kick that just misses. Henrique fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Henrique misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Snake was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind. Henrique closes the distance and clinches. Snake is defending well against a takedown attempt. Henrique tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Snake should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Henrique misses with a knee to the head. Henrique pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Snake misses with a body punch.
Snake tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Henrique smiles and moves away.
A lazy body kick from Henrique and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick. Henrique has taken the fight to the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Henrique manages to break the clinch.
Snake's coach down at Cozad MMA Rio was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Snake's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Henrique throws a left and a right that both miss
and Snake counters with a nice leg kick. Henrique misses with a double jab
and Snake counters with an outside leg kick.
Henrique has taken the fight to the clinch.
Henrique gets a nice trip takedown into half guard. Snake is looking to escape. Snake looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Snake keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Henrique thows an elbow strike that misses. Snake gets hold of full guard and has managed to get a loose guillotine attempt. Henrique doesn't seem too bothered but Snake quickly shifts his position and has tightened the hold! Henrique is in big trouble now - he's going a funny colour - he's tapping out! Nice finish there! Henrique really should have spotted the danger earlier though... either incompetence or over-confidence has resulted in a big L on his record.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). The Snake! The Snake bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it.
