Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Knox (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gideon Welles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnny Knox has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Johnny Knox!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gideon Welles!
The judges for this bout are Viktor Lagutenko, Vladimir Khabensky and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Knox lands with an overhand left.
Knox keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Knox has closed the distance and engaged Welles in a clinch.
Welles jumps guard but Knox stands there with Welles around his waist. Welles gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Knox's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Knox misses with a wild body shot.
Welles ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Knox moves away.
No joy there for Knox, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Welles changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Knox is breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Welles waves his right hand out infront of him, looking to distract Knox. Oh, he's unloaded a beast of a left hand - it worked! He's dropped Knox to the canvas! Can he finish him!?


It looks like Johnny Knox has been cut.
Welles passes into half guard.
Welles looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Welles moves into full mount! Knox won't be happy about that!
Knox is wriggling around trying to escape.

Welles has control of Knox's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Knox regains control of the situation pretty easily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Welles with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

Welles looking for a guillotine from mount but Knox is having none of it.
Knox is trying to escape the mount.
Welles lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Knox hang on?

Welles jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Knox is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Knox and Welles has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Welles is trying to get an arm triangle but Knox is defending well.
Knox is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Welles asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Welles is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Knox knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Welles swings around for an armbar but Knox sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Welles's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Welles has his foot on Knox's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Knox works his way back into a safe position though.

Knox avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Welles has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Knox is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Welles.
Knox tries to stand but Welles is controlling his head.
Knox will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Welles is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Welles regains half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Knox seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Welles does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Knox tries to stand and escape but Welles is controlling the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Knox wants to lay and pray for a moment but Welles keeps working.
Knox wants to stand up but Welles has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Welles bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Knox's head backwards.
Welles looks to score with a jab to the body but Knox is just out of range.
Welles avoids a punch combination nicely.
Welles uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Knox.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Welles shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Welles was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Welles has isolated one of Knox's arms. Knox looking to fight him off but Welles twists into an armbar. It's tight... Will he tap?? YES, he's tapped! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Gideon Welles!
