Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, David Rangel! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Commander Fred Waterford! The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Kavanagh and Eddie Farnsworth.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Waterford scores with a sloppy right hand. Rangel should have avoided that one. Rangel shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Waterford counters with a lovely straight right hand!
It looks like David Rangel has been cut. Waterford works Rangel's body with a nice hook. Waterford connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Waterford throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rangel changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Waterford closes the distance and clinches. Waterford lands a hook that snaps the head of Rangel backwards. Rangel has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Waterford after a bit of a struggle. Rangel is trying to trip Waterford. He has hold of a leg but Waterford is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Rangel persists though and gets the takedown into guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Waterford throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Waterford wants to stand up but Rangel is controlling him. Waterford really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rangel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Rangel lands a couple of decent looking shots. Rangel passes easily into side control. Nice work. Rangel scores with a couple of short elbows.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rangel avoids the strikes from the bottom by Waterford. Waterford wants to get back to his feet but Rangel drags him back down. Rangel landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Waterford is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Rangel has just dragged him back down to the mat. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Waterford can do anything to dispel that myth. Waterford tries to buck Rangel off but Rangel is having none of it. Rangel wants to control but Waterford is keeping him busy. Rangel is putting a hurting on Waterford here, landing some big shots from side control. Waterford is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Rangel is controlling him well. Rangel looking to control but instead Waterford has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard. Rangel is trying to control. Waterford wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Waterford has hold of Rangel's hands but Rangel slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Waterford looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Rangel stops Waterford from getting back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rangel has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Waterford defend it? Rangel steps over the head and cranks it - Waterford is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Rangel!
