PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Wagner Resende (ranked 6904 p4p, 0 weight class) and The Snake (ranked 5759 p4p, 0 weight class). The Snake will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Wagner Resende!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, The Snake!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Seu Braga and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Resende tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Snake manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Snake scores with a shot to the body.
Resende fails with the takedown.
Resende misses with a low kick.

Resende clinches up with Snake and pushes him back against the cage.
Snake is leaning against Resende and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Resende fails to pull guard.
Resende is stalling here.
Snake wants to break free but Resende has control.

Resende breaks the clinch.
Snake connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Snake slaps away a takedown attempt from Resende, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wagner Resende. That's going to take a lot out of him.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Snake scores with a push kick.
Resende takes a body kick right on the floating rib. Ouchie.
Snake with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Snake throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Resende stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Resende chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Snake can pounce on him.

Snake cracks a nice hook into Resende's ribs.

Snake gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Resende to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Resende is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Snake should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Snake utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Resende drops back, looking for a kneebar! Snake looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Snake looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Snake!

Resende tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Snake wants to stand but Resende has his arm trapped.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Resende manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Snake has eaten all the pies!

Snake is defending against the submission attempts here by Resende.

Resende is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Snake is just riding it out for now. Resende eventually gives up the hold.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Resende tries to pass to full mount but Snake defends it.
Resende passes to side control.

Snake is not content to let Resende control the position.
Resende wants to control for a moment but Snake uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Resende is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Resende looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Snake has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Cozad MMA Rio. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.

Resende wants to work for an arm triangle but Snake is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Resende is trying to control. Snake wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Snake really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Resende. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Resende passes to side control.

Resende is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Snake knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Resende thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but The Snake will probably get the nod.

Resende is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Snake's half guard.
Resende will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Resende is pressing down on Snake's thigh, looking to free his foot. Snake is holding on for now.
Resende works his way into full mount!

Resende jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Snake is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Snake and Resende has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Resende has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Snake is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Resende yanks on the arm and Snake is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Resende.
