The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Van Woodenhead shoots in and bounces Cokoko Ruiz off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Van Woodenhead thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cokoko Ruiz has his foot on Van Woodenhead's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Van Woodenhead works his way back into a safe position though. Van Woodenhead trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Cokoko Ruiz wants to sweep but no luck. Van Woodenhead avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Van Woodenhead will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Van Woodenhead forces his way into half guard. Cokoko Ruiz is trying to get back to full guard.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Van Woodenhead changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cokoko Ruiz is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Van Woodenhead. Van Woodenhead tries to buck Cokoko Ruiz off but Cokoko Ruiz is having none of it. Cokoko Ruiz is putting a hurting on Van Woodenhead here, landing some big shots from side control. Cokoko Ruiz avoids the attempt from Van Woodenhead to control. Van Woodenhead is bucking up trying to escape but Cokoko Ruiz cracks him with another couple of good strikes. Van Woodenhead is desperately trying to improve his position but Cokoko Ruiz has a good base and remains in mount. Van Woodenhead is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
