PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Mike Massey (ranked 8957 p4p, 0 weight class) and Miguel Rodrigez (ranked 6118 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mike Massey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Miguel Rodrigez!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Stewart Dunkirk and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Massey tries to keep at a distance but Rodrigez has taken the fight into the clinch.

Rodrigez has closed the distance and engaged Massey in a clinch.

Rodrigez lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Rodrigez is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Massey has managed to free his arm - good work.
Massey scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Rodrigez manages to mount him!
Massey really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Rodrigez controlling the position easily from mount.
Massey has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.

Massey is in bad spot here.
Massey wants to get back to his feet.
Massey looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Rodrigez is persistently looking for the submission but Massey is defending it well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Massey is having to fend off submission attempts from Rodrigez, who is looking to sink in the choke. Rodrigez doesn't have the hooks in though and Massey manages to reverse position! He's now on top, in his opponent's guard.

Rodrigez has his foot on Massey's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Massey works his way back into a safe position though.

Massey throws a big right hand that misses.

Rodrigez throws his legs up looking for a submission but Massey uses it to pass to side control.

Massey is trying to get an arm triangle but Rodrigez is defending well.

Rodrigez is looking for a sweep.

Massey tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Massey throws a strike aimed at the side of Rodrigez's head but Rodrigez avoids it well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miguel Rodrigez dominated that round.
That's time! Massey's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Rodrigez leaves Massey with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Rodrigez shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Massey manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Massey is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Rodrigez dives into side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rodrigez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Rodrigez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Massey is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Rodrigez swings around for an armbar but Massey sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Rodrigez's guard.
Massey has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Massey makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Massey distracts Rodrigez with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Rodrigez is active off his back here, looking for submissions.

Rodrigez isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Massey stacks Rodrigez on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Massey!
Massey scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Rodrigez to see if he's OK.

Rodrigez throws a couple of punches but he's in a bad position and they don't land.
Rodrigez can't do much from the bottom here.
Mike Massey overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Rodrigez manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Massey will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Massey lands with a punch from half guard.
Massey thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Rodrigez's head.

Massey lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

Massey is working for an americana but Rodrigez has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Massey was thinking about the submission.
Massey lands a couple of digs.

Rodrigez looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Massey with a flurry of punches that miss.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Massey is sitting in close to Rodrigez's body. Rodrigez has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Massey is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Massey is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Rodrigez.
