Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Barry Horowitz! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Ben Simmons! The judges for this bout are Sandra Marshall, Michael Johnstone and Winston Alpacca.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Simmons tries to sprawl but Horowitz drives through with a takedown into half guard. Simmons is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Horowitz pulls his head out easily. Simmons is not content to let Horowitz control the position. Horowitz is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Simmons defends it well. Horowitz is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Simmons is just riding it out for now. Horowitz eventually gives up the hold. Simmons is trying to get back to full guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Horowitz perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Simmons really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Horowitz. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's one minute gone in the round. Horowitz wants to work for an arm triangle but Simmons is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Horowitz is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Simmons sees it coming and defends easily. Horowitz passes the guard and advances to mount! Horowitz is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Simmons can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Simmons is wriggling around trying to escape.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Simmons can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Horowitz has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Simmons's face.
Horowitz tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Simmons wants to control but Horowitz is having none of it. Simmons tries to improve his position but Horowitz has taken his back! Horowitz has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Simmons tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Horowitz pushes Simmons away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:40 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Barry Horowitz! A determined Barry Horowitz didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
