PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Damien Sandow (ranked 2145 p4p, 283 weight class) and James Steel (ranked 3357 p4p, 406 weight class). Sandow comes into the arena with Aint No Grave blaring out of the sound system. James Steel is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Damien Sandow!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, James Steel!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Paul Aken and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sandow gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Steel counters with a lovely straight right hand!

It looks like Damien Sandow has been cut.
A slapping leg kick lands for Steel.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Steel!
Steel displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Sandow.
Steel feints and then cracks Sandow's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Sandow down.
Steel throws a big shot that misses.
Sandow shoots in but no luck this time.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sandow fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Steel avoids it really well and circles away.

Steel felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Steel keeps control of the position for the meantime.

Sandow is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Steel sees it coming and defends easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Sandow drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sandow jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Sandow has gone for a leg lock! Steel slips out almost immediately though and dives into Sandow's guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Steel tries to land a front kick but Sandow steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sandow shoots in looking for a takedown but Steel manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Sandow's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Steel connects with a good right hand that stumbles Sandow. Sandow circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Sandow's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Steel connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Sandow scrambles back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Sandow takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.

and Steel connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Sandow shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Steel pinned against the cage. Steel gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sandow steps to his left, right into the path of a big body kick from Steel. That one must have hurt.
Steel scores with a sloppy right hand. Sandow should have avoided that one.
James Steel seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Sandow takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Sandow throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Steel lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Sandow displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Steel throws out the jab.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Sandow goes for a double leg but Steel avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Steel continues to drive forward.
Steel scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Steel looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Sandow shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Steel as he avoids it easily.
Steel connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Crunch! Steel slams his shin into Sandow's torso.
Sandow moves away from the strike by Steel.
Steel cracks the inside of Sandow's front leg.
Sloppy strikes from Steel. Those never looked like landing.

Steel looks to land a combination but Sandow avoids it well.
Sandow misses with a takedown attempt - Steel sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sandow is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Steel is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Steel has escaped and now he's on top!

Sandow working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Steel doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Steel manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Well Steel has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
