Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sergio Martinez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kevin Murphy ! The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Reed Andrews and Russell Pearce.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martinez shoots in looking for a takedown. Murphy tries to sprawl out of it but Martinez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Murphy manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Murphy drives through and clinches with Martinez against the cage.
Murphy wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Martinez has him pressed against the cage. Martinez has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Murphy clear over his head and slammed him to the mat! Murphy manages to escape to his feet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. No luck with that takedown attempt from Martinez. Martinez swats away the attempt to clinch by Murphy . No luck for Martinez with that takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sergio Martinez. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's one minute gone in the round. Murphy swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Murphy moves into range and clinches up with Martinez. Murphy wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. The referee is keeping an eye on Martinez - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Martinez wants to take the fight to the mat but Murphy manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch. Murphy working some nice short punches in the clinch. Murphy is trying to break free. A bit of stalling here from Martinez.
Martinez is trying to pull guard but Murphy has him pressed against the cage. Martinez jumps guard.
Murphy gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Murphy 's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Murphy duly obliges.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nice takedown defense from Murphy . No joy for Martinez on that attempt. Murphy looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Martinez! Martinez tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops. Martinez is breathing heavily. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Murphy has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Martinez! Can he survive? No! He's out! Murphy gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
