PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tungh Pungh (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Miguel Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Rodriguez's choice of entrance music: roy jones jr cant be touched. Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Tungh Pungh!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Miguel Rodriguez!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A head kick misses from Rodriguez.
Pungh is looking to clinch.
Pungh fails with the takedown.
Rodriguez clinches but Pungh breaks the clinch
and Pungh counters with a good low kick that Rodriguez was not able to check.

Pungh shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Rodriguez bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
Rodriguez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pungh swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rodriguez wants to control from the top but Pungh keeps moving.

Pungh looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Pungh uses the cage to get back to his feet.

Pungh pushes Rodriguez up against the cage in a clinch.

Rodriguez gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Rodriguez manages to break the clinch.
Pungh circles away from the clinch attempt
and Pungh counters with a one-two to the body.
Pungh moves in looking to clinch but Rodriguez pushes him off.

Pungh moves into the clinch.

Rodriguez breaks the clinch.

Pungh tries to keep at a distance but Rodriguez has taken the fight into the clinch.
Pungh drops down looking for an ankle pick but Rodriguez pulls his leg out and moves away.
Rodriguez throws a lazy head kick

and Pungh counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Rodriguez!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Pungh avoids the attempt from Rodriguez to control.
Rodriguez tries to buck Pungh off but he can't manage it.

Rodriguez keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Pungh is breathing heavily.
Rodriguez slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Rodriguez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Pungh sitting and controlling from the half guard.
Rodriguez on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Rodriguez moves into full guard.
Pungh prevents Rodriguez from getting back to his feet.

Pungh controlling from the top position.

Rodriguez is looking for a triangle here but Pungh uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Pungh trying to control the position but Rodriguez is working away.
Rodriguez tries to bench press Pungh off him but Pungh keeps the position.
Pungh scoring with punches and elbows.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Rodriguez is letting Pungh control him for a moment.
Pungh seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Rodriguez for as long as he can get away with.
Rodriguez tries to bench press Pungh off him but Pungh keeps the position.

Pungh tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pungh has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rodriguez is not content to let Pungh control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tungh Pungh dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Rodriguez lands a head kick. Pungh smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Rodriguez is looking to clinch but Pungh is avoiding it.
Rodriguez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Pungh paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Pungh misses with a head kick.

Rodriguez gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Pungh lands a body shot in the clinch.
Rodriguez unloads a knee to the mid-section. Pungh lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Rodriguez throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Pungh blocks it with crossed arms.
Pungh is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Pungh tries to pull guard but Rodriguez won't allow it.
A knee to the head by Rodriguez.
Rodriguez can't break the clinch.
Rodriguez misses with a knee to the head.

Pungh manages to break the clinch.
Rodriguez tries to clinch there but Pungh circles away.
No luck for Pungh with that takedown attempt.

Rodriguez moves into range and clinches up with Pungh.
Rodriguez prevents Pungh from breaking the clinch.
Pungh jumps guard but Rodriguez stands there with Pungh around his waist. Pungh gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tungh Pungh. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Rodriguez connects with a knee to the head.
Pungh wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Rodriguez's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rodriguez turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Rodriguez tries for a takedown but Pungh sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Rodriguez misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

and Pungh counters with a single leg into guard. Rodriguez didn't expect that.

Rodriguez looking for a guillotine here but Pungh defends easily.
Pungh trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Pungh has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Rodriguez pulls Pungh in close to prevent any damage.
Rodriguez wants to sweep but no luck.
Rodriguez is trying to control the position but Pungh postures up.

Rodriguez looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Pungh wants to control from the top but Rodriguez keeps moving.
Pungh prevents Rodriguez from getting back to his feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Rodriguez throws a head kick that misses.

Pungh moves into the clinch.

Rodriguez breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Pungh tries to clinch but Rodriguez moves away

and Rodriguez counters by clinching up.
Rodriguez with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head.

Pungh breaks from the clinch.

Rodriguez fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Pungh, pushing him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rodriguez looking to throw knees to the head but Pungh is blocking nicely.
Rodriguez changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Pungh fights it off and pushes away nicely.

and Rodriguez counters with a shoot takedown. Pungh fights it but they end up in guard.

Rodriguez gets to his feet - Pungh follows without any prompting.
The fight stays on the outside here - Rodriguez looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Pungh looks for a takedown but Rodriguez sprawls well.

Rodriguez clinches up with Pungh and pushes him back against the cage.
Pungh is pressed up against the cage. Rodriguez has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Pungh down to the mat. Pungh avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Rodriguez drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Miguel Rodriguez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Pungh throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Pungh ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Rodriguez throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Pungh counters with a shoot takedown. Rodriguez fights it but they end up in guard.
Pungh would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Rodriguez has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. Pungh doesn't defend quickly enough and Rodriguez has managed to lock this one up! Can Pungh escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to Rodriguez on a fantastic submission victory.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:38 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Miguel Rodriguez!
