PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dan Sergeant (ranked 3804 p4p, 187 weight class) and Gabriel Ward (ranked 5360 p4p, 244 weight class). Gabriel Ward will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dan Sergeant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Ward!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Luis Engracia and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sergeant closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Sergeant lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Sergeant content to control rather than advance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sergeant is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Ward has managed to free his arm - good work.
Ward is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Sergeant jumps into side control!

Sergeant looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Ward moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Ward has momentary wrist control but Sergeant slips an elbow through the middle.

Ward isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Sergeant stacks Ward on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Sergeant!

Sergeant is nestled in close to Ward, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sergeant connects with a nice short shot to Ward's temple.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ward is desperately trying to improve his position but Sergeant has a good base and remains in mount.

This is a sustained period of stalling by Sergeant.

Sergeant postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Ward looks a forlorn figure.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
Sergeant seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Ward for as long as he can get away with.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Sergeant goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Ward has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Sergeant but great work by Ward.
