PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jesus Ruane (ranked 3092 p4p, 373 weight class) and Joseph Lewis (ranked 6655 p4p, 607 weight class). Lewis has chosen "City" - Hollywood Undead as his entrance music. Joseph Lewis will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jesus Ruane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Joseph Lewis!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, John Roberts and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lewis throws a left and a right that both miss

and Ruane counters by clinching up.

Ruane breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Ruane fails to land with a series of punches.
Jesus Ruane seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Ruane dodges the punch combination from Lewis.
Lewis misses with a series of wild punches.
Ruane shoots for a double leg takedown but Lewis sprawls well. He's pushed Ruane's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Despite the aggression on Lewis's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Sloppy strikes from Lewis. Those never looked like landing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A right-left combo lands from Lewis.
Ruane throws out a loose jab but Lewis uses good head movement to avoid it.
Lewis throws a counter combo.

Ruane closes the distance and clinches.

Lewis lands a right hand.

Ruane manages to break the clinch.
Lewis throws a series of punches but Ruane moves out of range.
Horrible takedown attempt by Ruane or perhaps it was just good defense by Lewis, which made it look bad.
Ruane backing away here, and Lewis unleashes a leg kick that just misses.
Lewis misses with a takedown attempt - Ruane sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Ruane has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
No joy there for Lewis, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Lewis shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Ruane eats them both and turns towards Lewis to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Ruane fails to land with a series of punches.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Lewis throws a series of punches but Ruane avoids them all with ease.

Ruane instigates a clinch.
Lewis is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Lewis takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Ruane breaks from the clinch.

Ruane clinches up against the cage.

Ruane breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Lewis looks to land a combination. Ruane sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Ruane takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Ruane drives through and clinches with Lewis against the cage.
Ruane misses with a hook from the clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Lewis tries to break the clinch but Ruane is controlling the position.
Ruane is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Lewis gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jesus Ruane. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ruane is breathing heavily.
A frustrated look appears on Lewis's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Ruane has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Lewis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Lewis wants to get back to striking at distance but Ruane won't allow it.

Lewis drives through and clinches with Ruane against the cage.
Ruane is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Lewis misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Ruane.
A frustrated look appears on Lewis's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Lewis escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Lewis shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Ruane eats them both and turns towards Lewis to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Lewis throws a series of strikes that have Ruane backpedaling.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Ruane circles away from the clinch attempt.
Lewis throws a right hand that Ruane ducks under and follows up with a left that Ruane also avoids with ease.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joseph Lewis dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Lewis fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Ruane sprawls well initially but Lewis persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Ruane has managed to escape just enough to sneak back to his feet but Lewis is on him like a limpet, forcing Ruane back against the cage.
Lewis has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Lewis has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Ruane jumps guard but Lewis stands there with Ruane around his waist. Ruane gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Lewis gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Ruane.
Ruane keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Lewis's efforts to push away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Lewis is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Ruane throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Lewis blocks it with crossed arms.
Lewis wants to get back to striking at distance but Ruane won't allow it.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Lewis wants to break the clinch but can't.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Ruane wants to stall.
Lewis tries to break the clinch but Ruane is controlling the position.

Ruane breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Lewis lands a jab-cross combination.

Lewis shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Ruane is trying to defend but Lewis finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Ruane is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Lewis scores with a couple of nice shots.

Lewis takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Lewis lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Still in half guard, Lewis seems content to control.
Ruane taking some punishment here, with Lewis in his half guard.
Lewis drops an elbow to the side of Ruane's head.
Lewis working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Lewis has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Lewis maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Ruane could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Lewis has cracked it and Ruane is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Lewis!
