Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jimmy Cathaway! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, David McDonald! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Leandro Rodrigues and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Horrible takedown attempt by McDonald or perhaps it was just good defense by Cathaway, which made it look bad. McDonald has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout. McDonald attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin. McDonald shoots in looking for a takedown. Cathaway tries to sprawl out of it but McDonald keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Cathaway manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. McDonald misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Jimmy Cathaway seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Cathaway throws a nice looking combination but McDonald bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Cathaway throws a right and a left that both miss. McDonald throws a counter combo. McDonald takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
McDonald feints and as Cathaway raises his hands in defense, McDonald changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Cathaway lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Cathaway controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Cathaway pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. McDonald is keeping the position for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cathaway postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McDonald working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cathaway doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cathaway manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Cathaway has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Cathaway slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Cathaway goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, McDonald has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Cathaway but great work by McDonald. McDonald tries to move to mount but Cathaway blocks the move with his legs. You can see the frustration on Cathaway's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cathaway is looking to regain half guard here but McDonald keeps moving and retains side control. McDonald working the ground and pound from side control. Cathaway is trying to improve his position. McDonald is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Cathaway has escaped the position, nice work there. You can see the frustration on Cathaway's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. McDonald is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Cathaway is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Cathaway tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Cathaway is working hard here to advance position. Cathaway sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. McDonald prevents Cathaway from improving his position. McDonald stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Cathaway to get to his feet. Cathaway connects with a good right hand that stumbles McDonald. McDonald circles away out of range and recomposes himself. McDonald closes this distance looking for a takedown but Cathaway circles away. Jimmy Cathaway has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of David McDonald. McDonald shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Cathaway sprawls well. Cathaway wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. McDonald gets slowly back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A nice inside leg kick there by Cathaway. That's going to slow McDonald down. Cathaway fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. McDonald with a lazy takedown attempt enabling Cathaway to counter with a crisp jab. Cathaway lands a brutal head kick. McDonald looks out on his feet and Cathaway throws more strikes until the ref is forced to stop the fight!
