PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Devon Malcolm (ranked 1775 p4p, 187 weight class) and Mario Pereira (ranked 1600 p4p, 169 weight class). Pereira has chosen Phil Collins - In The Air Tonight as his entrance music. Devon Malcolm is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Devon Malcolm!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mario Pereira!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Cecil Peabody and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sloppy strikes from Pereira. Those never looked like landing.
Mario Pereira seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pereira pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Malcolm is looking to counter with a shot to the body.
Pereira cracks Malcolm with a right hand to the side of the head.
Pereira misses with a hook to the body
and Malcolm connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Malcolm ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Pereira moves away.
Malcolm stuns Pereira with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Pereira throws a poor cross that misses
and Malcolm counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Pereira bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Malcolm fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pereira manages to avoid it.
Pereira lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

and Malcolm counters with a takedown into side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Malcolm taking a breather here.
Malcolm trying to control the position but Pereira is working away.
Pereira manages to work his way to half guard, despite Malcolm's best efforts.
Pereira felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Malcolm scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Malcolm content to control rather than advance.
Malcolm's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Malcolm missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Malcolm working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
We've been hearing that Malcolm has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Malcolm thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pereira's head.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Malcolm thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Pereira wants to get back to full guard.
Malcolm lands with a punch from half guard.
Malcolm keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Malcolm wants to control but Pereira is keeping him busy.

Pereira is looking to improve his position.
Malcolm wants to pass the guard but Pereira is defending well.
Malcolm sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Pereira defending well though.
Malcolm with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.

Malcolm tries to pass to full mount but Pereira defends it.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Malcolm is nestled in close to Pereira, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Pereira trying to hold on to Malcolm's head to control him but Malcolm postures up.
Pereira tries to roll over but Malcolm keeps him under control.
Malcolm seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Malcolm cracks a nice hook into Pereira's ribs.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pereira swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Pereira looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Devon Malcolm dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Pereira misses with a double jab
and Malcolm cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Malcolm throws a body punch but Pereira moves out of range.
Pereira closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Malcolm has managed to clinch.
Malcolm doesn't land with the attempted body shot.

Malcolm works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
Pereira can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Malcolm controls the pace.
Malcolm trying to control the position from guard on top but Pereira is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Malcolm connects with a couple of short punches.
Malcolm is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Pereira can do to turn this around?

Pereira is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Malcolm missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Malcolm engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Pereira pulls Malcolm in to control the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Malcolm lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Malcolm has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Malcolm content to sit in guard, stalling... Great. Oh but he could get punished here because Pereira has locked up a guillotine! Pereira's face is contorted as he sqeezes tight on the submission attempt - will he finish? Malcolm is holding on here and Pereira must be using up a lot of energy. Malcolm has gone limp! He's out! He's out cold! Pereira gets to his feet, tossing aside his stricken foe. Arms raised, he milks the applause from the crowd. Great submission!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:53 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Mario Pereira!
Mario Pereira seemed lost for words in his post fight interview but he remembered to thank his fans and directed everyone to his website.
