PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kristoph Gavin (ranked 24553 p4p, 749 weight class) and Rod Marchand (ranked 23480 p4p, 732 weight class). Marchand has chosen Daisy as his entrance music. Rod Marchand is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Kristoph Gavin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rod Marchand!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Chris Saunders and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marchand swats away the attempt to clinch by Gavin.
Despite the aggression on Marchand's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Marchand on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.

Gavin closes the distance and clinches.
Gavin scores with a nice hook to the head.

Marchand works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.

Marchand stands up and waves to Gavin to follow him.
Marchand blocks a head kick by Gavin.
Marchand avoids the head kick by Gavin.
Marchand shoots in for a takedown but Gavin shows good takedown defense.
Gavin misses with a head kick.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Gavin enables Marchand to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gavin manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Marchand is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Gavin avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Marchand trying to control the position from guard on top but Gavin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Marchand tries to free his leg and advance position but Gavin is retaining full guard.
Marchand slips nicely into half guard.
Marchand with the ground and pound but Gavin uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Marchand throwing strikes from guard but Gavin blocks nicely.

Gavin can't keep his opponent in guard - Marchand advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Gavin is defending against the submission attempts here by Marchand.
Gavin might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Marchand is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Marchand looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Marchand is looking for submissions but instead, Gavin has regained full guard.

Marchand postures up in Gavin's guard and throws a big left but Gavin blocks it.
Marchand looking to pass the guard.
Marchand loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Marchand advances to half guard.
Marchand not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Gavin is breathing heavily.
Marchand frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Marchand lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Marchand is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Gavin can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Gavin holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Marchand tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Gavin is wriggling around trying to escape.
Gavin avoids a series of strikes thrown by Marchand.
Marchand raining down shots from the mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rod Marchand dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Marchand shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Marchand drops an elbow to the side of Gavin's head.

Marchand is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Gavin has managed to free his arm - good work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Marchand thows a huge punch but Gavin dodges it nicely.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Marchand wants to control but Gavin is keeping him busy.

Marchand seems to be trying to get a kimura but instead Gavin has recovered full guard.
Marchand makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Marchand throws a big right hand that misses.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Gavin keeping moving, preventing Marchand from controlling successfully.
Marchand stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gavin swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Marchand not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Gavin knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Marchand on the ground.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Marchand trying to control the position from guard on top but Gavin is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Marchand is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gavin is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gavin has escaped and now he's on top!

Gavin controls from within his opponent's guard.
Gavin has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Marchand escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gavin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Marchand pulls Gavin in to control the position.
Marchand looking to control.
Gavin wants to control from the top but Marchand keeps moving.
Marchand is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Gavin is posturing up here but Marchand has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Gavin tries to roll out but it's too tight and Gavin has to tap! Slick submission there by Marchand!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Rod Marchand!
Rod Marchand bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it.
