PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rocco Rivers (ranked 25099 p4p, 0 weight class) and Billy Rawls (ranked 6242 p4p, 0 weight class). Billy Rawls will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rocco Rivers!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Billy Rawls !
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Chad Campbell and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rawls dives in and grabs Rivers's left leg, looking for a takedown. Rivers pushes down on Rawls 's head and hops out.
Rivers appears to be looking for a big counter.

Rivers instigates a clinch.

Rivers breaks from the clinch.
Rawls throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Rivers stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rivers wants it to stay on the feet.
Rawls changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Rivers tries to avoid it but Rawls manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Rivers to the ground. Rivers escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Rocco Rivers has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Billy Rawls .

Rawls clinches up against the cage.
Rivers lands a body shot in the clinch.

Rivers has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Rawls is trying to keep an underhook but Rivers manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Rawls is looking to control Rivers's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Rawls avoid being mounted?

Rivers decides to return to a standing position.

Rivers takes the fight into the clinch.
Rawls is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Rawls has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Rivers after a bit of a struggle.

Rivers breaks from the clinch.
Rawls shoots in for a takedown but Rivers shows good takedown defense.
Rawls fails with the takedown.

Rivers closes the distance and clinches.
Rivers could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Rivers decides to pull guard.

Rivers manages to escape and get back to his feet.

Rawls has closed the distance and engaged Rivers in a clinch.

Rivers is trying to trip Rawls . He has hold of a leg but Rawls is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Rivers persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Rawls is looking to sweep but instead, Rivers has passed into half guard.
Rivers has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Rawls tries to kick Rivers off in order to stand up. Rivers Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.

Rivers working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Rivers stands up and beckons Rawls to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rawls fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Rivers avoids it really well and circles away.

Rivers has closed the distance and engaged Rawls in a clinch.

Rivers gets control of Rawls 's arms and successfully pulls guard. Rivers will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Rawls wants to control from the top but Rivers keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rivers managing to control the position.
Rivers preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Rivers controlling Rawls 's posture.

Rivers manages to escape and get back to his feet.
Rawls tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rivers swivels and escapes.

Rawls closes the distance and clinches.

Rivers's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rawls shoots in for a double leg but Rivers sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rocco Rivers dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Rivers throws a head kick that half lands.

Rivers looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Rawls wants to control but Rivers is keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Rivers passes to side control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
You can see the frustration on Rawls 's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Rawls takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rawls on the wrong end of some ground and pound.
Rawls is trying to control Rivers's posture but Rivers avoids it.

Rivers has hold of Rawls 's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Rawls seems comfortable defending it but Rivers has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Rawls is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Rawls is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Rivers couldn't care less - he's delighted!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Rocco Rivers!
In defeat, Billy Rawls stepped up to the mic, saying 'Haha that guy was a joke... I basically let him win because it was just that boring. '.
