PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Frankie Edgar (ranked 2568 p4p, 266 weight class) and Derek Pappalardo (ranked 4087 p4p, 406 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Frankie Edgar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 11 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Derek Pappalardo!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Alyssa Summers and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pappalardo has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Edgar.
The crowd cheers as Edgar lands an impressive looking overhand right. Pappalardo doesn't seem phased though.
Pappalardo ducks under a wild hook from Edgar.
Edgar swings away with a body shot that misses
and Pappalardo counters with a stiff right hand.


It looks like Frankie Edgar has been cut.

Edgar gets tackled into the cage by Pappalardo. Pappalardo maintains the clinch.
Edgar is trying to pull guard but Pappalardo has him pressed against the cage.
Edgar swings wildly with an uppercut but Pappalardo uses good head movement to avoid it.
Edgar blocks a punch to the side of the head.

Edgar is trying to trip Pappalardo. He has hold of a leg but Pappalardo is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Edgar persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Pappalardo is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Edgar keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Pappalardo's head.

Edgar stands up over Pappalardo, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Edgar accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Edgar wants to control from the top but Pappalardo keeps moving.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Edgar lands a nice short elbow.
Edgar seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Edgar working over Pappalardo with some ground and pound. Pappalardo looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Pappalardo is looking for a sweep. Edgar is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Edgar is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Pappalardo doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Edgar.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pappalardo can do anything to dispel that myth.
Pappalardo has hold of Edgar's hands but Edgar slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Edgar lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Pappalardo is still in real trouble! Can Edgar finish him?

Edgar seems to be looking for submissions.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Edgar connects with a nice short shot to Pappalardo's temple.
Pappalardo really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Edgar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Edgar is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Pappalardo sees it coming and defends easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Edgar scores with a big shot! Pappalardo's head bounced off the canvas with a huge thud! More strikes land and the referee has jumped in to save Pappalardo! He was hurt real bad - good stoppage!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:20 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Frankie Edgar!
After winning the bout, Frankie Edgar thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
