Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Randy Kelly! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Angelo Suarez! The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kelly tries to clinch there but Suarez circles away.
And Suarez tries to counter it with a takedown but Kelly pushes his down on his head and steps out. Suarez avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Kelly moves into the clinch successfully.
Kelly fails to pull guard.
Kelly swings wildly with an uppercut but Suarez uses good head movement to avoid it. Suarez wants the takedown. Kelly is fighting it off but Suarez persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Kelly's guard against the cage. Suarez got a little sloppy there for a moment and Kelly has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Suarez has managed to get both his arms back between Kelly's legs - danger averted. Kelly looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Kelly is trying to control the position but Suarez postures up. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Suarez wants to control from the top but Kelly keeps moving. Suarez passes easily into side control. Nice work. Kelly is looking to reverse the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kelly is not content to let Suarez control the position. Kelly is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Suarez's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Kelly slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Suarez is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Suarez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Kelly swivels though and keeps the full guard. Kelly is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Suarez has his hands clasped together but Kelly extends and breaks Suarez's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Kelly.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Randy Kelly! A pretty intense looking Randy Kelly took the opportunity post-fight to ask for a shot at the title.
