Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dominick Dillashaw! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Ty Sterling James! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Dillashaw dives in and grabs Sterling James's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sterling James pushes down on Dillashaw's head and hops out. Dillashaw looks to land a body kick but Sterling James moved away. Dillashaw shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Sterling James sprawls well. Sterling James wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Dillashaw gets slowly back to his feet. Dillashaw sets himself, and Sterling James steps forward looking for the clinch! Dillashaw avoids it this time. Dillashaw gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Sterling James. Sterling James has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Dillashaw avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Dillashaw drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Sterling James gets the underhooks and prevents it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dominick Dillashaw. That's going to take a lot out of him. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sterling James pulls Dillashaw into guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Dillashaw wants to get up but he can't break Sterling James's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Sterling James is looking to stand up but Dillashaw isn't so interested in that idea. Dillashaw wants to stand but Sterling James has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Sterling James tries to strike from the bottom.
Dillashaw wants to stand but Sterling James is controlling his posture from full guard. Sterling James has Dillashaw pulled in close to control his posture. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Sterling James is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Sterling James showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Dillashaw.
Sterling James avoids a kick to the body.
Dillashaw lands a jab-cross combination. Sterling James slips a straight right by Dillashaw. Sterling James swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Dillashaw is breathing heavily. Dillashaw throws a hook to the side of Sterling James's head but Sterling James sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Sterling James fails in his attempt to clinch. Dillashaw blocks a head kick by Sterling James.
Sterling James tries to clinch up. Dominick Dillashaw seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Some wild striking there from Dillashaw.
Sterling James tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Dillashaw defends well and Sterling James ends up having to push Dillashaw into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Dillashaw tries to counter with a takedown but Sterling James is quick to defend against it. Sterling James shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Dillashaw defends it nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sterling James misses with an attempted mid kick.
Sterling James closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Sterling James with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Sterling James works his way into side control. Dillashaw is letting Sterling James control him for a moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sterling James's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Sterling James is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Dillashaw is trying to escape and Sterling James transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Dillashaw is forced to tap! Nice work there by Sterling James! Very nice indeed!
