23 - 23 - 2, fighting out of Tokyo, Kelvin Pouncey! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Dan Severn! The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Elvis Blanc and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Severn walks into a straight right hand from Pouncey. Severn shoots for a takedown but Pouncey saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Pouncey looks to land a combination. Severn sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots. Pouncey lands a leg kick that knocks Severn off balance momentarily. Severn takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Severn has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Severn with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Pouncey to score with a decent uppercut. Pouncey works Severn's body with a nice hook. Pouncey displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Pouncey throws a shot to the body.
Pouncey with a jab. Pouncey throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Severn stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Pouncey lands a jab to Severn's midsection. Pouncey fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Pouncey fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Severn has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Pouncey is looking to wear down Severn with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Severn shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Pouncey cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Severn takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

Pouncey scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Pouncey has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Severn is looking to improve his position.
Severn on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. We've been hearing good reports from Pouncey's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Severn gets back to full guard.

Severn wants to sweep but no luck. Pouncey is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Pouncey cracks Severn with a solid left hand. Pouncey is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Severn is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Pouncey is controlling him. Severn is scooting his butt against the ropes and has managed to get back to his feet. Pouncey presses him back against the ropes, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Severn is working to avoid the ground and pound but Pouncey connects with a decent elbow. Pouncey scores with a couple of short elbows. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Severn takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better. You can see the frustration on Severn's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Pouncey in side control, just content to control the action for now. Severn struggling a bit here.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Severn tries to bench press Pouncey off him but Pouncey keeps the position. Severn on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Severn wants to control but Pouncey postures up. Severn manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Pouncey is staying active underneath Severn, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Pouncey is looking to improve his position.
