Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Jarod Kirkland! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Michael Alexsej! The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Marco Blurström and Arvi Lind.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alexsej falls off balance throwing a combination
and Kirkland counters with a takedown into side control. Kirkland misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Alexsej trying to control but Kirkland flips him over like a cheap hooker and has his back! Kirkland throwing sloppy strikes. Kirkland has the hooks in. Alexsej is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Alexsej just trying to survive but Kirkland is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Alexsej fending off the submission attempt from Kirkland. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Alexsej tries to break free.

Kirkland is working an open guard so Alexsej takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Alexsej tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Alexsej shoots for a double leg takedown but Kirkland sprawls well. He's pushed Alexsej's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. A bit of a pause in the action here. Kirkland controlling the positon.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kirkland lands a couple of good shots to his opponent's body and a final shot to the head. Good little attack there by Kirkland.
Kirkland controls the position. Kirkland seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Alexsej for as long as he can get away with. Kirkland gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes. Kirkland has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Alexsej's body.

Kirkland is landing with some decent strikes but Alexsej is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Jarod Kirkland overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Kirkland landing strikes from the mount and Alexsej is in trouble! Alexsej is trying to get back to his feet but can't. Kirkland lands a nice shot to the head. Alexsej tries to lock up and control but Kirkland gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Kirkland's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Kirkland has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alexsej wants to clinch but Kirkland slips to the side and Kirkland counters with a single leg into guard. Alexsej didn't expect that. Alexsej is looking to stand back up but Kirkland counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Alexsej.
Alexsej makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work! A telegraphed takedown attempt from Kirkland is defended easily by Alexsej. Alexsej unleashes a big counter combination but Kirkland bobs and weaves and avoids any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Alexsej fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Kirkland sprawls well initially but Alexsej persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Alexsej takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. This has been an exciting period of action! Kirkland gets back to full guard.
Alexsej postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Alexsej is fighting to break Kirkland's control of his arms but Kirkland is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Kirkland tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Is there anything that Alexsej can do to turn this around? Kirkland working the head with strikes. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Alexsej taking a bit of punishment here - Kirkland scoring with strikes. And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jarod Kirkland. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kirkland, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
