Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mark Shields (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Eddie Alvarez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Eddie Alvarez struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 157.6lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Shields darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Alvarez is staying active underneath Shields, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Shields not landing any meaningful shots this time. Alvarez is controlling Shields's trapped leg to prevent Shields from advancing to side control. Shields is trying to control the action in half guard but Alvarez is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Alvarez actively working from the bottom here. Alvarez looks gassed!
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. No luck for Shields with that takedown attempt. Shields clinches up with Alvarez and pushes him back against the cage. Shields escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Shields shoots in but Alvarez avoids the takedown attempt easily. Shields throws a sloppy head kick and Alvarez moves out of range easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alvarez moves out of range as Shields throws a body kick.
Shields tries to land a front kick but Alvarez steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Shields misses with a body kick. Alvarez shoots in for a takedown but Shields shows good takedown defense. Shields has a takedown stuffed. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mark Shields. That's going to take a lot out of him. Shields lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Shields scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Shields is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Alvarez is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy. Alvarez wants to get back to his feet. Alvarez dodges the ground and pound from Shields.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shields stands up and we're back to a striking position. Shields is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Shields moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Shields misses with a series of wild punches.
Shields gets a takedown into half guard. Shields looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Alvarez is looking for a sweep. Shields is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alvarez trying to hold on to Shields's head to control him but Shields postures up.
Shields works his way into side control. Shields tries for a kimura but Alvarez is defending well. Shields in the domination position with Alvarez hanging on. Alvarez wants to control but Shields postures up. Alvarez is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Shields has control of an arm but Alvarez manages to advance to Shields's back!
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Shields is working the ground and pound. Can Alvarez escape? The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Shields has the hooks in. Alvarez is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shields has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Alvarez! Can he survive? No! He's out! Shields gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
