Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Aldo Shupe! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Stan Mullen! The judges for this bout are Micheangelo Fripello, Paul Gruel and Roger Salmon.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mullen wants to clinch. Mullen looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Mullen goes for a double leg but Shupe avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Shupe continues to drive forward. Shupe shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Shupe showed some decent athleticism there. Shupe is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mullen blocking the ground and pound attempt from Shupe. Shupe takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shupe looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Shupe throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Shupe tries to pass the half guard into mount. Mullen knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mullen is defending against the submission attempts here by Shupe.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mullen can do anything to dispel that myth. Shupe wants to work for an arm triangle but Mullen is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Shupe is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Mullen wants to control but Shupe is keeping busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Shupe seems to be looking for submissions.
Nice strikes from Shupe there. Shupe misses with a head shot. Mullen uses the momentum to regain guard. Shupe with a flurry of punches that miss. Shupe has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Shupe wants to control from the top but Mullen keeps moving. Shupe looking to sit in guard and control but Mullen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Shupe not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Shupe escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mullen gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Shupe trying to control the position.
Mullen throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Shupe works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Mullen postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Shupe working for a triangle but Mullen defends it easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Mullen trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Shupe pushes Mullen off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. We've been informed that Mullen has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight. Shupe fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mullen, pushing him back against the cage. Shupe is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Mullen to keep the fight standing. Shupe is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Mullen can't fight it off and eventually Shupe manages to take the fight to the floor. Mullen looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Shupe is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Shupe postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Aldo Shupe dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Shupe closes the distance and clinches. Mullen is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Shupe pulls him back up using the underhooks. Shupe working some nice short punches in the clinch. Mullen successfully pulls guard.
Shupe throwing strikes from guard but Mullen blocks nicely. Shupe decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Mullen, up you get! Shupe is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Mullen can do to turn this around? Shupe has Mullen up against the cage in a clinch.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Shupe takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shupe unloads a knee to the mid-section. Shupe softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Mullen is breathing heavily. Shupe breaks from the clinch.
Shupe forces Mullen back against the cage and clinches. Shupe lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Shupe wants to pass to mount but Mullen is defending the position. Mullen is defending against the submission attempts here by Shupe.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Shupe tries to pass the half guard into mount. Mullen knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Shupe trying to control from half guard but Mullen is working away. Shupe is looking for a kimura but Mullen is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Shupe to get the leverage. Shupe is trying to control. Mullen wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Shupe gets in close and instigates a clinch. Shupe is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Mullen is defending well. Shupe pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Shupe clinches.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mullen struggles to land a body shot inside as Shupe controls his hands.
Shupe lands a hook that snaps the head of Mullen backwards. Shupe gets through Mullen's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head. Shupe lands with a good tight uppercut to the head. Shupe gets a nice trip takedown into half guard. Shupe wants to take a breather but Mullen is having none of it. Mullen keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Mullen is defending against the submission attempts here by Shupe.

Shupe thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Mullen keeping moving, preventing Shupe from controlling successfully. Shupe postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mullen tries for a takedown but Shupe circles away easily and Shupe counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Shupe lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Mullen is trying to defend but Shupe finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Shupe is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Shupe trying to control the action but Mullen is working from the bottom.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shupe is trying to work for a kimura but Mullen is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Shupe throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Shupe is looking to take a break and control but Mullen is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Shupe missing with the ground and pound from half guard. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Shupe thows a huge punch but Mullen dodges it nicely.

Mullen postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Mullen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shupe has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mullen has managed to get both his arms back between Shupe's legs - danger averted. Shupe is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Shupe is looking for a triangle here but Mullen uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Mullen landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. The strikes coming from Mullen are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Shupe knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mullen on the ground. The ground and pound from Mullen seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent. Mullen looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Shupe is avoiding damage well.

Shupe is trying to get back to half guard. Mullen working the ground and pound from side control. Mullen creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Mullen throws a strike aimed at the side of Shupe's head but Shupe avoids it well. Mullen in side control, throwing shots but Shupe defends. Shupe tries to get back to half guard but can't. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Shupe managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Mullen.
