Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Pedro Pete (ranked 6586 p4p, 623 weight class) and Higo Higa (ranked 7806 p4p, 656 weight class). Higo Higa has the power to score a knockout today if he connects clean with Pedro Pete's chin.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Pedro Pete! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Higo Higa! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Edson Gomes and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Higa clinches with his opponent.
Pete gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Higa looking for a guillotine here but Pete defends easily.
Higa can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Pete controls the pace. Higa is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Higa keeping moving, preventing Pete from controlling successfully. Pete might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Higa drives through and clinches with Pete against the cage.

Higa trying to control the position from guard on top but Pete is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Pete is looking to stand up but Higa isn't so interested in that idea. Higa drops back looking for a leg! Pete is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Pete manages to kick Higa off! Higa jumps back into Pete's guard. Higa looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Higa tries to free his leg and advance position but Pete is retaining full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Higa avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Higa trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Higa tries to clinch up. Higa pushes Pete up against the cage in a clinch. Pete tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Higa smiles and moves away.

Higa has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight. Pete shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Higa misses with a takedown attempt - Pete sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Higa gets caught flat footed, as Pete shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Pete throws a big elbow that misses. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Higa fails with a takedown attempt. Higa bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut. Pete rushes Higa and presses him up against the cage. Higa looking to stall.
Pete has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Higa after a bit of a struggle. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pete breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Higa is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. A nice glancing elbow lands by Higa. Higa tries a knee to the head but Pete blocks it.

Higa has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Higa walks away with a smile on his face. Pete gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Pedro Pete. That's going to take a lot out of him. Higa shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Higa dives in and grabs Pete's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pete pushes down on Higa's head and hops out.

Higa blocks the body kick.
Higa doesn't manage to clinch there - Pete circles away.
Pete closes this distance looking for a takedown but Higa circles away. Higa tries to clinch up but Pete circles away and keeps his distance. Higa closes the distance and pushes Pete back into the cage. Higa gets underhooks to prevent Pete's takedown attempt.

Pete drops down looking for an ankle pick but Higa pulls his leg out and moves away.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Pete is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Pete dodges an elbow strike from Higa.
Pete blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Pete tries to circle away but Higa has him pinned against the cage. Higa stalling.
The referee is keeping an eye on Higa - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.
Pete's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Pete fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Higa sprawls well initially but Pete persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Higa is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Higa moves into full guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pete showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Pete wants to control from the top but Higa keeps moving. Pete's corner is telling him to maintain position. Higa wants to stand and escape but Pete is having none of it. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Pete controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Pete pushing down on Higa's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Pete prevents Higa from standing back up.

Higo Higa showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Pete not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Pete is taking a breather. Higa says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Pete postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Higa to stand up. Pete rushes Higa and presses him up against the cage. With the fighters up against the cage, Higa throws an elbow but misses. Higa using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Higa crunches a lovely knee into Pete's ribcage. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Higa is stalling here.

Pete drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles. Pete feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Higa wants to sweep but no luck. Pete won't allow Higa to get back to his feet. Higa is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Pete is stalling in the full guard. Pedro Pete overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pete wants to pass the guard but Higa is keeping the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Higa looking for a sweep. Not yet Higa, not yet. Higa is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Pete is controlling him. Pete is in close to Higa's body, working some short punches and elbows. Pete stands up from guard. Let's bang! Higa moves into the clinch. Pete has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate. Pete drags the fight down to the ground.

That's two minutes gone in the round. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Higa accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Pete pulls Higa in to control the position. Higa throwing strikes but missing. Higa trying to control the position from guard on top but Pete is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Higa tries to free his leg and advance position but Pete is retaining full guard.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Higa gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. Pete tightens his grip and picks Higa up, before dumping him to the ground. Higa manages to land in guard.

Higa wants to stand but Pete is controlling the position. Pete content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Higa being controlled here, momentarily. Pete is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Higa wants to stand and escape but Pete is having none of it. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Higa has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Pete is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Higa. Pete landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Higa tries to get back to half guard but can't. Pete lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Higa is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Pete is controlling him well. Pete in side control lands a nice looking series of punches and elbows. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Pedro Pete had his way with Higo Higa in that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Despite the aggression on Higa's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter. Pete is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Higa's half guard. Higa wants to get back to his feet. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Pete is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Higa is looking to control Pete's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Higa avoid being mounted?
