PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between John McCoy (ranked 2476 p4p, 242 weight class) and Gun Seok Bak (ranked 1429 p4p, 153 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Bak's choice of entrance music: Leader, Just Give Us Your Order!. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, John McCoy !
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Gun Seok Bak!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Chad Campbell and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bak connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
McCoy gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Bak dips to his left and cracks McCoy with an uppercut!
McCoy fails with a takedown attempt.
Bak lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Bak lands a body shot.
McCoy looks to score with a jab to the body but Bak is just out of range.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Bak! But no joy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Bak connects with a good right hand that stumbles McCoy . McCoy circles away out of range and recomposes himself.

Bak moves into the clinch successfully.
McCoy wants a takedown but no success here.

Bak lands with a nice combination. McCoy backs away looking to recover.

Bak's corner calls for a 1-2. Bak obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Bak feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits McCoy s jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

McCoy definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.

McCoy misses with a right hand
and McCoy takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Gun Seok Bak is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Bak scores with a jab to the head.
Bak has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight.
McCoy takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Good exchange - Bak coming out on top.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
McCoy is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

McCoy shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. McCoy showed some decent athleticism there.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Bak can do anything to dispel that myth.

Bak manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. McCoy keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Bak manages to break the clinch.
McCoy misses with a looping left.

and Bak connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John McCoy . That's going to take a lot out of him.
Bak scores with a nice strike.
Bak might want to mix his strikes up a bit more. He's just going for head shots at the moment and that can become a bit predictable.

and Bak counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Bak scores with a jab. McCoy acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
McCoy shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Bak but Bak pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Gun Seok Bak seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Bak connects with a crisp jab.

Bak keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
It seemed like Bak was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Bak is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! McCoy had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté.

Bak scores with a sloppy right hand. McCoy should have avoided that one.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Bak jabs McCoy right on the nose. McCoy blinks but takes it well.
Bak lands a nice shot that snaps McCoy 's head back.

McCoy gets a takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Bak wants to get back to his feet.
McCoy trying to control the action but Bak is working from the bottom.
Bak looks like he's trying to stand up.
McCoy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with McCoy in particular looking to stall.
The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Bak pushes McCoy off looking to stand but McCoy dives back in and keeps control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gun Seok Bak dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


McCoy walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
McCoy misses with a takedown
letting Bak counter with a right hand.
Bak lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Bak throws a nice looking combination but McCoy bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Nice straight punches there by Bak. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Bak.
Bak scores with the left hand. McCoy knows he should have avoided that one.
Bak digs a good body shot into McCoy 's ribs.
Bak has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
McCoy misses with a left hand
enabling Bak to counter with a crisp jab.
McCoy lands a nice shot to the body.

Bak gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Bak pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Nice straight punches there by Bak. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Bak.

McCoy gets cracked there but stands up to it.

Bak gets a clinch.
Bak lands a body shot in the clinch.
A right hand to the body from Bak.

Bak manages to break the clinch.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Bak, as that shot connected.
Bak lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.

Bak closes the distance and clinches.
Bak prevents the takedown attempt.
Bak lands a hook that snaps the head of McCoy backwards.

Bak breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Bak scores with a nice strike.
McCoy tries for a takedown but Bak circles away easily
and Bak counters with a nice uppercut.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John McCoy . That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Bak cracks McCoy with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.

Bak moves into range and clinches up with McCoy .
McCoy is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Bak pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Bak lands a body punch.
A right hook to the body lands for Bak.
McCoy 's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Oh McCoy is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Bak unloads with a big right hand that wobbles McCoy ! He's leaning against the cage trying to keep his feet but Bak is unloading with more strikes now! McCoy drops to his knees and the referee stops the fight for a TKO!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:42 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Gun Seok Bak!
Gun Seok Bak tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
