PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kelvin Blankenship (ranked 24937 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rudy Gobert (ranked 5690 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kelvin Blankenship!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rudy Gobert!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Alan Glass and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Blankenship shoots in but Gobert avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Gobert is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Blankenship fails with the takedown
and Gobert counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.


It looks like Kelvin Blankenship has been cut.
Gobert goes for a double leg but Blankenship avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Blankenship continues to drive forward.
Gobert misses with a head kick.
Gobert lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Gobert shoots for a double leg takedown but Blankenship sprawls well. He's pushed Gobert's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Blankenship shoots in for a double leg but Gobert sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Blankenship tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Gobert manages to circle out of the way.

Gobert tries to bum rush Blankenship with a series of wild strikes but Blankenship uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Blankenship could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Gobert scrambles and gets back to his feet.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Blankenship bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Blankenship in side control lands a decent elbow.
Gobert is trying to work for a sweep but Blankenship has mounted him!
Blankenship unloads with some shots from mount but Gobert bucks and avoids them well.

Blankenship goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Gobert is on top in guard.
Gobert throws a strike but Blankenship rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Gobert is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Blankenship makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Blankenship stands up from guard. Let's bang!
Gobert fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gobert stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Gobert wants it to stay on the feet.
Gobert lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Blankenship is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gobert sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Gobert shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Blankenship counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Blankenship.

Blankenship tries to clinch but Gobert is having none of it.
Blankenship tries to score a power double leg takedown but Gobert sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Blankenship somewhat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gobert has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Gobert is fighting to break Blankenship's control of his arms but Blankenship is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

Blankenship utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Blankenship looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Blankenship is looking for a triangle here but Gobert uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Gobert trying to control the action but Blankenship is working from the bottom.
Gobert throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Gobert fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Gobert working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Gobert. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

Gobert decides to stand up, so the ref orders Blankenship to his feet.
Gobert misses with a jab, cross combination.
Gobert scores with a nice right hand.
Gobert tries to clinch but Blankenship moves out of range.
Gobert is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Gobert circles away from the clinch attempt.
Gobert lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Gobert is looking to clinch but Blankenship is avoiding it.
As Gobert tries to get set, Blankenship tries to push him back and clinch up but Gobert manages to avoid the attempt.

Blankenship changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Gobert tries to avoid it but Blankenship manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Gobert to the ground. Gobert escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Blankenship shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gobert pinned against the cage. Gobert gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kelvin Blankenship. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gobert is defended easily by Blankenship.
Blankenship seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Gobert clinches up with Blankenship and pushes him back against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rudy Gobert showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Blankenship darts in looking for a takedown but Gobert gets double underhooks and turns Blankenship into the cage.

Blankenship gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Gobert.
Gobert has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Blankenship is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Gobert wants to take the fight to the mat but Blankenship manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Blankenship fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Gobert lands a knee to the head there! That was nasty!
Blankenship is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.

Gobert is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Blankenship gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Gobert tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Gobert breaks from the clinch.

Gobert has closed the distance and engaged Blankenship in a clinch.
Blankenship lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Gobert backwards.
Blankenship can't get the takedown.

Gobert escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Blankenship shoots for a takedown but Gobert saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
As Blankenship backs off Gobert throws a huge counter combo but Blankenship manages to avoid it all.
Blankenship fails with a takedown attempt.
Blankenship moves out of the way of the counter high kick fromGobert.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gobert will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
As Gobert tries to get set, Blankenship tries to push him back and clinch up but Gobert manages to avoid the attempt.
Gobert tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Blankenship manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Blankenship wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.

Blankenship gets a double leg takedown into Gobert's guard.

Gobert scrambles and gets back to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Blankenship closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Gobert quickly recovers to half guard.

Gobert manages to escape and get back to his feet!

And that's the end of the fight!
Rudy Gobert comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gobert has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
