PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Joe Lugg (ranked 5683 p4p, 571 weight class) and Tori Kankunnen (ranked 5192 p4p, 540 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joe Lugg!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Tori Kankunnen!
The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Donatello Bradman and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kankunnen shoots in and bounces Lugg off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Kankunnen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Lugg swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kankunnen is pushing down on Lugg's leg trying to pass to half guard. Lugg is fighting to maintain full guard but Kankunnen has managed to sneak the leg through.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kankunnen slips a nice elbow through Lugg's hands, connecting with Lugg's forehead.
Kankunnen is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Kankunnen is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Lugg is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Kankunnen pulls his head out easily.
Kankunnen is taking a breather. Lugg says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Lugg wants to improve his position but Kankunnen is controlling well.

Lugg is refusing to be controlled, as Kankunnen sits in half guard.

Lugg is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Arvins Bootcamp, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kankunnen looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Lugg with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Kankunnen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Kankunnen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Lugg. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Lugg is trying to escape the mount.

Kankunnen is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Let's hope that Kankunnen has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Lugg might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kankunnen works his foot free and advances to mount.
Lugg is trying desperately to improve position.
Kankunnen scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Lugg?
Lugg is in all sorts of trouble here.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Lugg is looking to improve his position but Kankunnen isn't that keen on the idea.
Kankunnen lands with some strikes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tori Kankunnen dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!



Kankunnen throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Lugg was covering up waiting for the punch and Kankunnen finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Lugg is looking to cinch up a triangle. Kankunnen throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Lugg's body to avoid the submission. Lugg has instead reached around Kankunnen's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Lugg arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Joe Lugg!
Joe Lugg decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
