Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ricky Steamboat (ranked 3339 p4p, 382 weight class) and Jermey Arnold (ranked 2934 p4p, 348 weight class). Steamboat kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Migos- Bad and Bouje . Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
23 - 21 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ricky Steamboat! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
36 - 21 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jermey Arnold! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, John Kavanagh and Joseph Jones.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Steamboat shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Arnold napping and manages to drive through into side control! Arnold is trying to improve his position. Arnold can't do much from the bottom here. Steamboat lands a few punches from side control. Arnold sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Steamboat looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Steamboat is working for a kimura but Arnold is defending it quite comfortably.
Steamboat wants to pass the guard but Arnold is defending well. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Arnold has one foot on Steamboat's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Arnold fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Steamboat on the side of the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Steamboat has his takedown stuffed and Arnold counters with a right hand to the body. Steamboat misses with a takedown attempt and Arnold counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Arnold cracks Steamboat with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage. Steamboat takes one on the button. Steamboat fails to land the takedown. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ricky Steamboat. That's going to take a lot out of him. Steamboat shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Arnold as he avoids it easily. Steamboat needs to keep his hands up - Arnold had a free shot at his head there. Steamboat takes a kick to the side of the head. Arnold lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Steamboat shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Arnold counters with a lovely straight right hand! Arnold displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Steamboat. Steamboat fails to land the takedown.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Steamboat has his takedown stuffed letting Arnold counter with a right hand. Steamboat is breathing heavily. Arnold scores with a head kick. Steamboat tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time. Horrible takedown attempt by Steamboat or perhaps it was just good defense by Arnold, which made it look bad. Arnold now looks to counter with a shot at the body. Arnold throws a nice inside leg kick. Steamboat fails with the takedown. Steamboat is trying hard to land a takedown here. Arnold sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Nice takedown defense from Arnold. No joy for Steamboat on that attempt. Arnold throws a nice outside leg kick. Steamboat fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Arnold lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice straight punches there by Arnold. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Arnold. Jermey Arnold is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Steamboat takes a kick to the side of the head. Steamboat has a takedown stuffed. As Steamboat backs off Arnold throws a huge counter combo but Steamboat manages to avoid it all. Arnold is landing a lot of head punches in this opening round! Steamboat had better start moving his head a bit unless he wants his face to turn into pâté. Steamboat shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Arnold counters with a stiff right hand. Steamboat tries for a takedown but Arnold circles away easily and Arnold counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Steamboat takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Arnold lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.
Arnold throws a head kick that Steamboat semi-blocks.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Steamboat misses with a takedown and Arnold counters with a stiff right hand. Steamboat shoots and misses and Arnold connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Danga de danga de dang - Arnold scores with a four punch combination!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Steamboat with a poor takedown and Arnold counters with a left to the body. Arnold jabs Steamboat right on the nose. Steamboat blinks but takes it well. Arnold throws a nice head kick!
Steamboat is rocked! Steamboat with a lazy takedown attempt and Steamboat takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Oh Steamboat is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Arnold throws out a powerful jab. Arnold lands with a straight right. Steamboat didn't see that one coming. Steamboat shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Arnold pinned against the cage. Arnold gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Arnold goes for a high kick. It partially lands. Steamboat looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. Steamboat shoots for a takedown but Arnold saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Steamboat seems to have got his legs back now. Steamboat fails with the takedown. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jermey Arnold dominated that round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Steamboat tries for a takedown but Arnold sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Arnold is clearly looking to counter with head kicks. Steamboat changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Arnold tries to avoid it but Steamboat manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Arnold to the ground. Arnold escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Arnold lands a nice shot to the body.
Nice takedown defense from Arnold. No joy for Steamboat on that attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ricky Steamboat. That's going to take a lot out of him. Steamboat shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Arnold pinned against the cage. Arnold gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Arnold lands a head kick!
It looks like Ricky Steamboat has been cut. Steamboat shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Arnold but Arnold pushes him off and we're back to square one. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Steamboat shoots in for a takedown but Arnold shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Ricky Steamboat seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Arnold keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Steamboat gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Arnold counters with a head kick that crumples his opponent - he's in a world of trouble! Arnold looks at the referee who does nothing so Arnold lands a crushing right that sends Steamboat to the floor! This time the ref steps in to end the fight.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jermey Arnold! Jermey Arnold decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little. Ricky Steamboat spoke after the fight, saying 'Good win to for my opponent will be back'.
