PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Quinoa Smiff (ranked 858 p4p, 117 weight class) and Calabi Yau (ranked 880 p4p, 120 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Calabi Yau was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A looping hook to the body misses from Yau. Smiff does a little dance to reset his feet.
Smiff shoots in and drives through. Yau sprawls well.
Donk. Yau catches Smiff right on the button with a cross.
Yau changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.
Yau takes a shot to the body in his stride.

It looked like Smiff was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Yau.
Quinoa Smiff seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smiff lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Yau stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Smiff misses with a takedown attempt
and Smiff takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Smiff throws a poor cross that misses
and Yau counters with a nice body shot.

Smiff tries to clinch up but Yau circles away and keeps his distance.

It looked like Smiff was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Smiff takes one to the side of the head.

Smiff walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Yau lands a beauty of a right hand that gets the crowd cheering.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Smiff feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Yau has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Smiff off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Smiff tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Yau paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Yau feints and then winds up with a huge right hand that connects perfectly and sends Smiff sprawling to the canvas! Smiff rolls over backwards and springs off the cage and manages to regain his footing - how acrobatic! Oh, he's still wobbly - can Yau finish him?!
Oh Smiff is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Yau digs a good body shot into Smiff's ribs.
Smiff is looking to wear down Yau with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Smiff throws a solid leg kick but Yau takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Smiff.

Smiff seems to have got his legs back now.

Yau rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Yau thuds his right hand into Smiff's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smiff is trying to control the action in half guard but Yau is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Yau is looking for a sweep. Smiff is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Smiff stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Yau swivels though and keeps the full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Smiff seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Calabi Yau comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
