Coming up we have a middleweight Tycoon World Grappling Championship rules bout between Aloysius Martin Thesz (ranked 3000 p4p, 384 weight class) and James Penn (ranked 2823 p4p, 0 weight class). Penn has chosen Everything in its right place as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the middleweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Rio de Janeiro, with a TWGC record of 9 wins and 9 losses; Aloysius Martin Thesz! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 6 losses; James Penn! The judges for this bout are Saam Ante, Nard Betker and Paulsen Ambrosius.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Penn shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Thesz sprawls well. Thesz wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Penn gets slowly back to his feet. Thesz drives through and clinches with Penn against the cage.
Thesz goes for a takedown attempt but Penn pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Thesz pushes Penn up against the cage in a clinch. Thesz drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Penn gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Thesz works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Thesz (2) vs (0) Penn We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Thesz sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Penn's guard. We've been hearing good reports from Thesz's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Penn is looking to control Thesz's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Penn avoid being mounted?

Thesz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Penn keeps working. Penn is looking for a sweep. Thesz is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Thesz slows the pace down in half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Penn. Thesz wants to control from the top but Penn keeps moving. Penn keeping full guard, as Thesz tries to pass. Thesz trying to control but Penn is working from the bottom. Penn escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Thesz gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Thesz controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Penn controls Thesz momentarily but Thesz frees himself. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Penn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Thesz controls the pace. Penn wants to sweep but no luck. Thesz not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Penn manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Thesz manages to get himself to full guard.

That's five minutes gone in the round. Penn wants to pass the guard but Thesz is keeping the position. Penn postures up.
Penn's corner is telling him to maintain position. Thesz is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Thesz is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Thesz bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Penn's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Thesz (4) vs (2) Penn Thesz slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Penn not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Penn being controlled here, momentarily. Thesz tries to free his leg and advance position but Penn is retaining full guard. Thesz is working hard here to advance position. Thesz slips nicely into half guard.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Thesz is looking to take a break and control but Penn is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Penn wants to control but Thesz passes into side.
Score +3 for passing guard: Thesz (7) vs (2) Penn Thesz laying and praying for a moment but Penn takes advantage and regains half guard. Thesz wants to take a breather but Penn is having none of it. Thesz seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Thesz wants to pass to mount but Penn is defending the position.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Thesz with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Penn tries to get to full guard but Thesz has control of the leg. Penn wants to control but Thesz is keeping busy and won't allow it. Thesz controlling the action here.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Thesz is trying to control. Penn wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Thesz seems to be looking for submissions.
Thesz seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Thesz seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Penn for as long as he can get away with. Thesz prevents Penn from improving his position.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Thesz is looking to advance position but Penn won't allow it. Penn tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Thesz has advanced to mount. Uh oh. Score +3 for passing guard: Thesz (10) vs (2) Penn Penn can't escape the position.
Thesz tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Penn tries to lock up and control but Thesz gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Thesz controlling the pace for now.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Penn keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Thesz wants to control the pace but Penn is squirming around nicely. Thesz content just to control the position here. Thesz tries to take Penn's back but instead Penn uses the opportunity to regain half guard. Well, if Thesz is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Thesz wants to advance to full mount but Penn doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead. Thesz preventing the sweep. Penn can't keep his opponent in guard - Thesz advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Thesz content to control rather than advance. Thesz has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Thesz continues to stall. Penn is not content to let Thesz control the position. Thesz is pressing down on Penn's thigh, looking to free his foot. Penn is holding on for now.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Thesz prevents Penn from improving his position. Thesz seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Thesz moves nicely into side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Thesz (13) vs (2) Penn Penn manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Still in half guard, Thesz seems content to control. Thesz's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
