PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rocky Balboa (ranked 4567 p4p, 529 weight class) and Mike Murphy (ranked 4136 p4p, 494 weight class). Balboa comes to the cage accompanied by Hearts on Fire. Mike Murphy is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rocky Balboa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mike Murphy!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Chad Campbell and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice jab there from Murphy.
Murphy has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Balboa is landing a low percentage of strikes.
Balboa misses with a hook. Murphy ducked under it nicely.
Balboa throws a big shot that misses.

Murphy has managed to clinch.
Murphy lands a shoulder strike.
A nice left hand lands by Murphy.

Balboa jumps guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Balboa is looking for a triangle here but Murphy uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Balboa wants to get back to his feet.
Balboa tries to bench press Murphy off him but Murphy keeps the position.
Murphy really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Balboa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Balboa manages to work his way to half guard, despite Murphy's best efforts.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Murphy in particular looking to stall.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Balboa tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Balboa is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Murphy prevents Balboa from getting the reversal.
Balboa is working hard here to advance position.
Murphy tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Murphy wants to take his opponent's back but Balboa doesn't allow it.

Balboa wants to control but Murphy is having none of it.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Balboa is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Murphy works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Balboa is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Murphy's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Murphy's back!

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
You can see the frustration on Murphy's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

Murphy is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Balboa gets his way!
Murphy tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Murphy walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Balboa swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Murphy.
Balboa throws a series of punches but Murphy avoids them all with ease.

Rocky Balboa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Murphy scores with a crisp jab that stopped Balboa in his tracks.

and Murphy counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Balboa takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Balboa tries to clinch there but Murphy circles away.
Murphy wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Murphy fails to land with a series of punches.
Balboa misses with a combination
and Murphy counters with a right hand to the body.

Murphy ducks under a wild hook from Balboa.
Murphy let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.

Murphy clinches.
Murphy lands a left hand that snaps the head of Balboa backwards.
Murphy lands with a short shot to the head.

Balboa misses with a short punch on the inside.
Murphy lands an uppercut.
Balboa swings wildly with an uppercut but Murphy uses good head movement to avoid it.
Murphy tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Balboa's elbow.
A quick uppercut on the inside from Murphy.
Murphy lands a nice shot to the body.
I was talking to Balboa's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Still in the clinch, Murphy scores with a nice short uppercut.


Balboa is rocked!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Murphy creates some distance for himself and unleashes a massive uppercut that sends Balboa's eyes rolling into the back of his head! Balboa drops to his knees and Murphy pours it on with more strikes until the referee steps in to end the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mike Murphy!
Mike Murphy bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it.
