PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Brady Patton (ranked 9492 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Eric (ranked 5957 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Brady Patton has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Brady Patton seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Brady Patton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, James Eric!
The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Eric keeps the fight on the outside.
Eric lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
Patton shoots in but Eric avoids the takedown attempt easily.

Eric shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Patton manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Patton is striking but Eric is not phased and passes to half guard.
Patton wants to get back to his feet.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Patton wants to get back to full guard.

Eric is looking for a kimura but Patton is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Eric to get the leverage.

Eric content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Patton is pressing down on Eric's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Patton is looking to stand up but Eric isn't so interested in that idea.
Eric is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Patton is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Eric fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Patton, pushing him back against the cage.

Patton gets control of Eric's arms and successfully pulls guard. Patton will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Patton is trying to keep Eric in close.
Eric wants to get up but he can't break Patton's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Patton can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Eric controls the pace.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Patton tries to keep at a distance but Eric has taken the fight into the clinch.
Eric creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Eric is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.

Eric lands a takedown into guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Eric throws a big right hand that misses.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Eric dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A looping hook to the body misses from Eric. Patton does a little dance to reset his feet.
Patton changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Eric tries to avoid it but Patton manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Eric to the ground. Eric escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Eric clinches with his opponent.

Eric breaks from the clinch.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Eric jumps guard and drags Patton to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Patton is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Eric has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Eric has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Patton is looking to work some ground and pound but Eric has wrist control.

Patton keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Eric has taken the fight to the clinch.

Eric escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A bone on bone clash there as Eric blocks the leg kick.
Patton lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Eric circles away quickly and effectively.

Eric moves into the clinch.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Eric.
Eric content to slow the pace in the clinch.

Patton successfully pulls guard.
Eric won't allow Patton to sweep him here.

Eric tries to free his leg and advance position but Patton is retaining full guard.
Patton keeping moving, preventing Eric from controlling successfully.

Eric wants to control from the top but Patton keeps moving.
Eric wants to stand but Patton is controlling his posture from full guard.

Brady Patton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Eric.
Eric is breathing heavily.

Eric darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Eric showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

Eric raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.

Eric looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Patton is fending him off so far but Eric persists. Nope, Patton circles away and we're back to standing.
Patton tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Eric defends well and Patton ends up having to push Eric into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.
Patton throws a leg kick but Eric sees it coming and moves out of range.
Eric misses with a series of wild punches.

Patton fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Brady Patton is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Eric fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Patton sprawls well initially but Eric persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Patton manages to escape and get back to his feet!

Patton stuffs the takedown attempt from Eric. Eric gets slowly back to his feet.
Eric takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Eric pushes Patton up against the cage in a clinch.

Patton manages to pull guard.

Eric has gone for a leg lock! Patton slips out almost immediately though and dives into Eric's guard.

Patton thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Eric is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Patton defends well.
Eric seems keen to control Patton's posture.

Eric controls Patton momentarily but Patton frees himself.

Patton's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Eric closes this distance looking for a takedown but Patton circles away.
Patton drops down looking for a counter takedown but Eric sprawls and moves away.
Brady Patton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of James Eric.
Patton misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Patton fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Patton moves into the clinch.
Patton tries to pull guard but Eric forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Patton goes for a takedown attempt but Eric pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Eric misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Patton drops down looking for a counter takedown but Eric sprawls and moves away.

Eric closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Eric wants to take a breather but Patton manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Eric.
Patton looking to hit a scissor sweep but Eric is one step ahead there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Brady Patton showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Eric has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
