PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jimmy Kelly (ranked 4953 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ben Simmons (ranked 6135 p4p, 0 weight class). Ben Simmons will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jimmy Kelly!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ben Simmons!
The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Eliza Hachem and Darius Henderson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Simmons throws the left hand but Kelly avoids the punch easily.
Kelly moves out of range of the strikes.
Simmons misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Simmons swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Simmons misses the shot to the body.
Jimmy Kelly seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Kelly fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Simmons misses the shot to the body.
Simmons moves in looking to clinch but Kelly pushes him off.
Kelly tries to counter with a takedown but Simmons is quick to defend against it.
Kelly dives in for a single leg takedown but Simmons sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Simmons throws out a counter right but Kelly avoids it with no problem.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kelly tries to score with a low kick but Simmons moves his leg out of the way.

and Simmons connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Simmons throws an overhand right that lands on Kelly's shoulder, as Kelly tries to avoid the shot.

Simmons misses with an uppercut

so Kelly counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Simmons wants to get back to his feet but Kelly passes into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kelly not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Kelly looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Simmons is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Kelly thows a huge punch but Simmons dodges it nicely.
Kelly perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Kelly has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kelly's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Simmons really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kelly. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Simmons is controlling Kelly's trapped leg to prevent Kelly from advancing to side control.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Simmons throws a body shot but no joy.
Simmons throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Kelly sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Simmons takes a swing at Kelly's ribcage but misses.
Simmons is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Simmons stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Simmons wants it to stay on the feet.
Simmons looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jimmy Kelly. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kelly drives through with a takedown into Simmons's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Kelly stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Simmons swivels though and keeps the full guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Jimmy Kelly will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Simmons fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kelly manages to avoid it.
Kelly shoots for a takedown but Simmons saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Simmons looks to throw the jab but Kelly is out of range.

Kelly drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kelly jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Kelly controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Kelly stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Simmons swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Simmons throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Kelly fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Simmons to the ground. Kelly is now in Simmons's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Kelly working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Kelly is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Kelly forces his way into half guard.
Kelly lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Kelly moves nicely into side control.

Kelly is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Simmons is trying to escape and Kelly transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Simmons is forced to tap! Nice work there by Kelly! Very nice indeed!
