Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Kim Barnes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Killa Ward! The judges for this bout are Seu Braga, Leandro Rodrigues and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Barnes shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ward as he avoids it easily. Barnes really is a fat lump. A head kick from Ward lands but Barnes takes it in his stride.
It looks like Kim Barnes has been cut. A head kick by Ward misses and Barnes counters with a series of strikes. Ward will be more careful next time no doubt. Barnes goes for a double leg but Ward avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Ward continues to drive forward. Ward fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Barnes to the ground. Ward is now in Barnes's guard. Barnes trying to strike off his back.
Ward trying to control but Barnes is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ward thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Barnes keeping moving, preventing Ward from controlling successfully. Barnes looking to hit a scissor sweep but Ward is one step ahead there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ward with a nice head shot there. Barnes trying to control the position.
Ward pushing down on Barnes's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Ward stands up out of the half guard. Ward shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Barnes's guard. Ward trying to control but Barnes is working from the bottom. Ward is looking to work some ground and pound but Barnes has wrist control. Barnes isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Ward stacks Barnes on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Ward! Ward remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Ward misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Ward in side control lands a decent elbow. Ward has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Barnes is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Ward yanks on the arm and Barnes is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Ward.
